Daily Prompt: Privacy
We enjoy some privacy at home. We like to feel free to move around the house without drawing attention to the neighbors. Our second story windows are facing some neighbors. In 2005, my husband and I decided to plant a row of cypress trees to serve as a natural fence. It provides green to sooth the eyes as well as some privacy to our daily activities. The first two photos were taken when my husband planted the trees. The third photo was taken in 2011. The trees had grown quite tall. The last photo was taken today.
I want to thank Naomi Byrnes‘ comment about this post, “Amazing to see the growth over ten years. I’m inspired realizing it’s worth planting something today for the life I want in the future.”

Was the growth of the bougainvillea affected by the reduced amount of light due to the “living” fence?

The bougainvillea is no longer at the same spot. Since they grow fast, I bought new plant and planted it in different part of garden. Light is important. In the last picture, you can see that I trim between trees to let the light in, also trim the bottom part to make them look like tree trunks, but for the purpose of let the light in. Thank you for the observation!

Wow. There must be a lot of effort in triming and maintaing them!

The first few years needed to water regularly. We don’t do it anymore. The roots are deep to draw water from deeper soil. Trim the top every few years!

oh. But it seems they are rather tall. Do you get professional folks to come in and trim them?

Yes! But we only do it every few years!

So beautiful!!! That is my favorite tree! I tried to grow it in a pot but they always die with me getting first yellow and than fading completely, i do not know what i did wrong! Your trees are gorgeous, great job!!!

I think the moist in a pot is not consistent. If they are planted in the soil, eventually will get to maintenance free! Ours only need trimming get they get taller than the wires!

Those look lovely. Mediterranean cypresses I believe? We have similar conifers in the U.K. but the tend not to be as slim as those. I prefer yours; they look very elegant.

I believe there are two kinds, the slim and a fatter kind, it’s wide the lower 2/3. We prefer the slim ones. Thank you for your comment.

Yes, we learn so much from nature. I love gardening. I learn a lot from gardening also. We water the trees i the first few years. We don’t need to water them now because the roots are deep. Thank you for your comment. I’ll add your tags to my post!!!

Thank you! We had to water them the first few years. Now the roots are deep enough to draw water from the deep soil and we don’t need to water them any more!
