The art of pause is very important in my counseling service. Most of the ladies who seek help have complex issues. Sometimes they have a lot to talk about and are happy that someone listens to them. Other times, they couldn’t find words to describe their thoughts and feelings. I am to feel comfortable to pause and allow silence. I find pause and silence is as effective as talking!
This is a wonderful thought, Miriam. It reminds me, I find it helpful to pause at times in my writing – to find a new direction for a story, or just figure out what comes next. 🙂
The art of pausing. Well, I was a genius at it while growing up. I had to compete with my brother to have my say at the dining table which meant that I had to speak non-stop. At such times my father would say, “I think it is time for you to take a breath.”
I can’t help but laugh out loud! Don’t feel bad. Having brothers, girls have to show their strength. I had a fight with my brother when we were kids. He threw something at me and broke my front teeth!!
Oh my! Angsty brothers. Wait, your brother could have competed with mine. My brother once stuck a pencil into my palm because I was apparently annoying him. Rolls eyes. Anyway, you can laugh at that all you want. I do it all the time. Also, when I used to fight with my brother – proper fisticuffs – my mother would say, “Let me hand you two bats. Go finish off each other.”
My mother was such a dragon, Miriam. She was funny in her own ways. A gutsy woman with plenty of stories and a penchant for hiding her daughter’s story books, especially MBs. She became friends with me only once I moved out of home and lived in another city to study and work. Thankfully now I see a tamer version of her former self 😉
It usually is the case that mom and daughter become friends after the daughter moved away, the mom missed the daughter and the daughter becomes more mature. Then realize that, after all, it’s a family!
You are there with that statement because you are a mother 🙂 The amazing sacrifices that only parents can make – it never ceases to take me aback. My mother rambles a fair bit now when I call her. And I like it because a few years ago she was in the clutches of depression. Anyway, I shall turn in for the night. You have a wonderful evening xx
Yes, I have a “Communication” book with animations. One illustration shows that two people were supposed to be talking. When one person was talking, the other person was not listening, but just thinking what she was going to say next… It’s so true in life!!
Absolutely true.

A lot of relationships would have been saved if the skill of pausing was used

Yes, my husband doesn’t like to jump into the conversation. If people don’t pause, he never had a chance to talk!!!!

It is the most critical thing to know…I think knowing when to not speak is way more difficult than knowing what to speak!
