Baby Doves Were Growing
Mama Dove was still incubating on July 3, 2017. The first photos of the Baby Doves were taken on July 4. They must be hatched in the middle of the night. By the time I took the photos on the 4th in the afternoon, the first Baby’s feathers were dried. The second Baby’s feathers were still wet.

First day of Baby Doves
On July 5th early in the morning, I saw Mama Dove was sitting with the second Baby lying sideways under Mama’s bosom. I wonder if Mama was staying with her all night to keep her warm. Mama didn’t stay with them all day. She had to go look for food or eat the bird seeds I put by their nest.

Second Day
On July 6th in a late morning, Mama Dove was with the Babies again. This time, the first Baby was lying sideways underneath her. After the day turned warmer, she took off to find food.

Third Day
On July 7th, both Babies looked good. The second Baby looked healthy, even though one spot under the chin still didn’t have feathers. Mama was sitting side by side with Babies, no longer needed to keep them under her warm bosom.

Wonderful photos Miriam! We have lots of doves in our neighborhood and in our yard, and we often hear them calling in the evenings. But I’ve never got to see the babies in the nest like this. 😀

They are smart this year to build the nest under our eaves. They lost their eggs last year with the nest in the tree!

It’s always a bit heartbreaking to find eggs broken on the ground. I guess birds can learn from their mistakes too. 🙂

Somehow I didn’t find any egg shell pieces. The natural instinct tell them not to leave the shell close to the nest!

Thank you so much! Yes, I can’t get over how lovely they are. The bigger one has stripes on the center on his head and across the end of the eyes. I hope he won’t grow out of those stripes!

I find these doves are very passionate. When they lost the eggs last year, Mama was sitting in the grass, motionless for 10 minutes. Papa stood within 2 feet, didn’t move a feather, just stayed with her, looked at her. As soon as she moved a little bit, he also moved the head and stretched. That was the most passionate, considerate thing I’ve seen among those doves.

That’s so sweet!! It’s funny how animals react to losing their young. My sons had a chinchilla who died of a broken heart after her baby died the day after it was born.

Oh no, animals do have feeling for their lost. When we watch the nature video, the mother, even the sibling would linger about the young that died. They poked and turned, see if they would come back! It’s heartwarming and heart breaking to watch them!

I’m glad you like them! I watch them several times a day, and watch the parents also. When they are not in the nest with them, they perch on the trees near by and try to chase other birds away so they won’t be near their babies!

How lovely, Miriam. I raised a baby Hoopoe and a baby dove in my younger days. They fell out of their nests and so I raised them or they would have died. Both survived and were later released into the wild.
