Weekend Writing Prompt #18
Weekend Writing Prompt #18: Poetry Challenge – Write a sonnet on a theme or subject of your choice. – Sammi Cox
Walking Around Laguna Lake
I love walking around Laguna Lake
Stillness of reflection in the water
Evergreen trees and plants soothed my headache
Mothers enjoyed strolling with their daughters
Fishing lovers rewarded with plenty
Kids cast fishing lines along with brothers
Ducks snoozed under the shade joined by many
Birds perched on Myrtle trees of bright colors
Descending sun cast long shadow of me
Trailing behind the same speed as my feet
Walking for two miles bent and stretched my knee
Sweat and tiredness asked for water and treat
I couldn’t resist the pleased invitation
Sat on the beach, admired the creation
~
The Shakespearean or English sonnet follows a set of rules of three quatrains and a couplet and follows this rhyme scheme: abab, cdcd, efef, gg. The couplet arrives in the form of a conclusion, amplification, or refutation of the previous three stanzas. https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/text/sonnet-poetic-form

Beautiful sonnet. I loved the couplet at the end, and the final words, “admired the creation” finished the poem off perfectly 🙂

Thanks for the nice explanation of the sonnet. I’ve written sonnets without the rhyme scheme or meter … perhaps not strictly following the form, but nicely flexible. 🙂 Thanks!

This is one of the forms, easier to follow. There are other forms also. Yours maybe the one without rhyme scheme and flexible. I’m trying different poem forms, so when the prompt is sonnet, it gave me a chance to try! Thank you for reading, Teresa!

Of course! I love trying forms – there is a comfort in structure. 🙂

When rhyming words don’t come right away, I used a site to help me find the words!

That’s the way to do it! 🙂 – before websites, people used rhyming dictionaries. No shame in that!

Yes, I can have choices and sometimes ideas to change my lines!

WP is doing fun to my site. It got me unfollow many long time bloggers even the one that I do their challenges. Then my follower got unfollow me also. Anyway, I’ll contact them. Here is the link, paste on your Reader, if you have to, do unfollow and then follow. I re-follow one blogger three times and it’s still made me unfollow. So hopefully you don’t have to do it again and again.
