Thursday’s Special: Pick a Word in October – Y2
Paula’s photo challenges with PICK A WORD theme. The words to choose from are: mountainous, whiskers, crumbling, spanning, and immaculate.
I picked the word mountainous. On our trip to Germany, we took a tour to visit Eagle’s Nest. When we got to the mountaintop, we were presented with a spectacular view of Bavarian Alps. It was the most majestic mountain range with rivers and lakes at the foot of this enormous limestone.
Bavarian Alps (German: Bayerische Alpen) is a summarizing term of several mountain ranges of the Northern Limestone Alps in the German state of Bavaria. The Bavarian Alps were heavily influenced by the last ice age. Cirques, lakes, and typical U-shaped valleys were formed by the glaciers. Depositions by the ice age, rivers, and glaciers left behind a gently rolling landscape in the Alpine Foreland with lakes and bogs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bavarian_Alps
The Kehlsteinhaus is situated on a ridge atop the Kehlstein, a 1,834 m (6,017 ft) sub-peak of the Hoher Göll rising above the town of Berchtesgaden. It was commissioned byMartin Bormann in the summer of 1937. Paid for by the Nazi Party, it was completed in 13 months but held until a formal presentation on April 20, 1939, Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday as a birthday gift. A 4 m (13 ft) wide approach road climbs 800 m (2,600 ft) over 6.5 km (4.0 mi). Costing RM30 million to build (about 150 million inflation-adjusted euros in 2007), it includes five tunnels but only one hairpin turn. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kehlsteinhaus

the first pic is amazing – the clouds look equally massive as the mountains, if the mind was not whispering “the clouds are clouds – very light, soaring ” we wouldn’t see the difference 🙂

He is very cuddly! Yes, I forgot the height of the peaks. Eagle’s Nest is less than 3000 feet and was covered with snow in April when we went.

I think it’s the time of the year, April, when we were there. It had snow but also had sunlight over the clouds. I love taking photos of the clouds against the blue sky!

well we (family) were just talking about the eagles nest – and a few other german things – so this post is timely for me – – and wow to ” five tunnels but only one hairpin turn.” – it must have been some major project for that 13 months of building….

They could do it when they wanted it done – for Adolf. The “party” hired the best engineers, and mobilize as many people as needed to hit the deadline. One tunnel we took was very long before reaching the highly secure elevator. it goes straight to the top, I forgot how high it went from bottom to the top, but it seemed to be quite high. Spent all the money to build such a secure place, he only used it 14 times!!

14 times???
and did it have a weird vibe?
like was there a heaviness in the air?

We went to Germany and Austria. We started from Berlin. My heart was aching when visiting the museum and looked at the remaining Berlin wall. We then went south. We visited the concentration camp in Munich. Of course everything was bombed flat. One bungalow and the gas chamber were rebuilt as demonstration. I was so so depressed. Then visited the Eagle’s Nest. Again, all the documents were displayed to show Hitler’s plan.
Anyway, I was glad that Austria was in our itinerary. My heart was lifted when we visit Mozart’s birthplace, the Von Trapp family home, and Vivaldi’s statute, and attended a concert.
