Colleen’s Weekly #Tanka Tuesday #Poetry Challenge this week is “Inspiration & Plan,” #Synonyms Only.
Shark fin soup is a delicacy served in China and part of Asia in weddings and special celebrations. I had shark fin soup when I lived in Hong Kong a very long time ago but didn’t associate the soup with the sharks because it’s called fish soup. In today’s price, it cost about $100 a bowl (one cup).
I love watching documentary movies and nature videos. I was shock and sick to my stomach when watching fishermen catching the sharks, take them on board the boat, chop off the fins, and then discard the sharks back into the ocean where they die from blood loss, suffocation, or are eaten by other animals.
Ever since I watched that movie, I boycott eating shark fin soup. I hope more people stop eating it so there is no market for shark fin soup.

i didn’t know this, thank you Miriam. The only time I’ve had ‘fish soup’ was when I lived in Honolulu. i had no idea it was the result of something so brutal.

Your fish soup might not have been shark fin soup. I don’t know. You can ask about it next time.

I haven’t lived in Hawaii in decades. At this point my diet is vegan, primarily because my partner is a food fascist. 🙂

I had vegan sushi yesterday. My daughter and her hubby have been vegetarians for almost 20 years and sometimes have vegan food. It’s good for you. 🙂

Thank you, Lynn. I should add to the post that in Chinese, it only refers to it as fish soup. I’m afraid many people who eat it don’t know what they are eating. 🙂

Isn’t it interesting when our eyes become opened to the cruelty in the world, done usually for money? I’m glad you wrote a poem dedicated to saving our wildlife. I love it. ❤

Thank you, Colleen. I went for a walk with Autumn, sometimes she falls asleep in the bumpy ride. Then I remember the Chinese language refers the soup as fish soup. I thought I was eating fish soup. The scientists and marine biologists are doing their part to stop the killing. ❤

Great post. I never had the soup or much of anything from the sea as a child. Fresh brook trout were the choice.

Thank you, Cheryl. I used to eat oysters. But the year that had oil spill and poison the sea life. Oysters were on the list of not recommended to eat. I stopped and don’t miss a bit.

I know, when we went to Australia and had dinner at some restaurant that serve the meals of the lovely animals. I wouldn’t have the heart to eat them.
