August 2, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes a yellow tent. Where is it and who does it belong to? Think of how the color adds to the story.
Yellow Tent
“How was your sleep last night?”
“Awful. I’m not the camping type. My back hurts.”
“You slept in a cot. Didn’t it help?”
“It’s just the idea of not having walls around that gave me a nightmare.”
“The tent is our wall.”
“But that yellow color is so light that I could see the moonlight.”
“That should be soothing and relaxing.”
“But, but… it’s like transparent. I felt like sleeping in the open air. I heard growling and saw a bear chasing me.”
“The bear didn’t chase you. We had a bear visit and stole our food last night.”
Miriam, I take it you are not a fan of camping! I’d love to introduce you to glamping in Montana — there’s a place with heavy canvas tents, full beds, and even a personal butler!
Thank you, Debby, It was two true stories of my camping combined in the flash.
BTW, I still write the part of story I talked with you about. I may keep it as a legacy to pass it on. I may publish it when he is no longer around, no hurry here. Thank you for helping me think. 🙂
You’re right. I totally agree with you. I responded to a comment about my flash fiction, that each flash is based on my true story with a little twist and imagination. It’s easier for me to latch on something to write. 🙂
My thinking is camping is for the young who have the energy for it all. I like to camp and then go home and sleep in my own bed! Maybe that’s not really camping!
Good morning, Miriam. Your flash sums up my thoughts about camping – uncomfortable and close encounters with wild animals! Haha! I’ve been absent for a while recovering from a concussion, but happy to be back with the community this weekend.
I did fall – tripped on the sidewalk when I went to the National Society of Newspaper Columnists conference in Cincinnati and fell on my head. It was quite a time but I’m grateful it wasn’t worse.
I did go to the ER – no stitches but rather an abrasion on my head and lots of dizziness. Had a CT scan, also hit my right shoulder but no fracture thank God. I have needed extensive recovery time. Took 8 weeks off from work and just went back last week 1/2 days. Am doing a lot better now but quite an ordeal. I wrote about my experience on my blog. I have a new appreciation for anyone who has a concussion. Even a mild one can be life altering.
Oh, Molly, I’m glad you didn’t need stitches. It was a big shock to your head! Good thing that your should was not hurt. My friend had tripped and the foot and ankle flipped bottom side up, tore the ligament and had a permanent damage of the nerve. She had unpredictable pain shock through the body. The doctor is considering disconnect the nerve and paralyze the middle three toes of that foot.
I’m thankful for you. God is good. I’m sorry for my friend also. She was so active and just retired. She was hoping to travel with her husband but now everything is unknown.
Very very nice Miriam! I don’t like camping! And I am so glad there are no bears in Ireland! 😦

Charli, you made me laugh. Yes, I need to bring my hotel bed to go glamping.

Ha, ha! A Butler who looks like a cowboy is all I ask for and I’m there with my suitcase, too!

Most of my flash fiction stories are based on experience or reading. 🙂

That’s how I write! 🙂 Everything taken from real life experience 🙂 xx

And everyone’s interpretation with a same experience is different. Mary Karr’s illustration in The Art of Memoir is a perfect example. 🙂

Your piece made me smile, Miriam. I have similar ideas about camping and am not a fan.

Yes, Robbie. I’m too much of a city girl. The story is from two different experiences. None of them was pleasant though.

I don’t mind that kind of camping! Haha, yes, it may not be considered as real camping!

Wow! I’m so sorry for your friend’s injury and long term effects. I was lucky – it could have been so much worse for me.
