WOW! Another soul across the miles who gets Thomas Merton. He did a lot of contemplating in his short life, but oh what he came up with is still alive and well today. Spiritual. Meditative. Testament.
Excellent choice. I went to a meditation retreat in Kentucky some years back. On the last day we were taken to a monastery where Merton once lived, and where he is still highly revered to this day. He used to spend most of his time in a hermitage.
One room on a secluded patch of land. One small writing table, small bed, and not much more. I suppose he did have a candle or dull oil lamp to write by.
I imagine he did much of his contemplation there. I was fascinated and deeply moved, especially hearing about his beginnings, and then sadly, his abrupt end. Thankfully, he left quite the legacy behind for us to learn and grow from.
I learned so much about him from his memoir The Seven Story Mountain. It almost didn’t get published because of his honesty about the monastery. I have a lot of respect for him of all the study he had and decided to become a monk. He has a lot of his writing.
Yes. He did get straight to his point, and wasn’t shy about exposing what he felt were falsehoods. I actually prefer no beating around the bush, as long as a sense of integrity is present!
Hi Rhonda. Thank you. I came back 1 1/2 weeks ago and I’m home. They have busy weekend schedule in August, so my next trip in in September to go to Autumn’s birthday.
