Lens-Artists Weekly Photo Challenge #19: Magical Light
During my recent trip to Portland, Oregon to see my granddaughter, I flew up from southern California. It was in the early evening and I anticipated to see the sunset. I booked a window seat looking toward west. It was during summer when the day was long, and the sun went down by 9:00 p.m. I was not disappointed because I saw the gorgeous sunset and the horizon above the clouds was lit up with bright orange light.
By 9:15 p.m. the sun almost went down completely. The orange light was diminishing.
The plane landed at 9:30 p.m. the sky was completely ultramarine blue.
It is always a delight to see a change in the light you see in the skies.

Yes, Colline, the light in the sky especially during sunset fascinates me. Thank you for stopping by and comment.

Pretty cool. I love sky watching and doing it from the air is doubly cool. The color blue of the sky on landing is great. And then the full moon is always nice and fun to photograph. Anyway, great photos.
Once, in “a previous life” as an Air Traffic Controller (really) I was in the jump seat of a jet at night. (Before 9/11 ATC could fly “familiarization flights” on commercial aircraft to see what their customers experienced.) It was pretty cool that we could see the entire Eastern seaboard laid out in front of us, from Portland, Maine at one horizon to Washington, DC at the other, but what made it special was that the auroras were out filling the sky with flashing lines of color. That was a memorable flight.

Oh wow, what an extra ordinary experience, Trent. Is it the similar auroras seen in the north. Was it before we could see the view in front of the plane on our individual screen? I was going to ask you about your job. Are you retired?

This was back in the 1990s. And yes, the northern lights. As to job, ATC was not for me…. I am still in the FAA but am a computer nerd taking care of web site hosting.

I see. My husband is a helicopter pilot. He keeps the license active but doesn’t fly any more.

Yes, Brigid. I was driving two days ago and saw the ray form sunset but there was nowhere I could stop to take photos. Winter is coming, the light will be different. 🙂
