Colleen’s 2019 Weekly Poetry Challenge – Slow & Work

Here is this week’s Colleen’s 2019 Weekly Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge No. 121, “Slow & Work,” #SynonymsOnly

January 12 to 20, 2019, a group of family members from West Coast of the U.S.A. traveled to Hong Kong to celebrate my nephew’s wedding, a joyous begging of a new journey. It was a marathon ceremony of playing Chinese traditional games when the groom picked up the bride in the morning. The games were set by the bridesmaids and responded by the groom and best men. Only when all the games were responded, the door was open for the groom to pick up the bride. Then a modern church wedding and garden cake ceremony were held in the afternoon, and a nine-course Chinese banquet was served in the evening when the bride and mother-in-law (my sister) changed their gowns four times.

The travel pass used for transportation is call Octopus. The name fittingly describes the system of Mass Transit Railroad, Light Rail and buses. People could go anywhere in Hong Kong by hopping on and off the public transportation. Mercy and Will took Autumn hiking by themselves on many mountains I had never been before. We also went to Ocean Park to see the exotic marine life through a tunnel with display windows and glass overhead. There were rare red pandas, sea lions, otters, penguins, walrus and beautiful birds. Some of us went on the thrilling roller coaster ride.

In the midst of the trip, one of my sisters was found ill and admitted to the hospital. She passed away in three days with all the immediate family by her bedside. She took part in a Ballroom Championship contest two months before her Home going. Her beautiful image will be forever in our memories.

Celebration and Mourning

Celebration and mourning all at once,

a journey of mixed emotions and

a long flight home, stressed and saddened,

hard to get over jet lag.

With no demand of job,

I took time to let

my body find

its way back

to old

self.
