Colleen’s Poetry Challenge – Poet’s Choice of Words
Colleen’s Poetry Challenge – It’s the first challenge of the month which means Colleen let poets get to choose their own words.
Spring is Coming
We
Didn’t
Complain the
Four winter rains
Came seven days straight
Brought sixteen inches water
Measure by the water gauge
Garden soil soaked many inches down
Best time to add nutrient and prepare
Spring’s glorious blossoms coming to town
My chirping friends of mourning doves, blue jays
House finches, song sparrows and hummingbirds
Flapping back after southern stay
Crossing a thousand miles
With no GPS, satellite
Brought us big smiles
By showing up
And saying
to us
“Hi”
I have sent a mail

Thank you, Dwight! We had the last rain and cold until yesterday. But the roses started budding already!

The “Hi!” at the end made me smile.
Do you think your hummingbird will be back this year, or do they not migrate very much?
LikeLiked by 3 people
Thank you! The baby hummingbird stayed through the winter. The parents went south. but the papa came back after three weeks – came back beginning the month, mama came back 3 days later. Now the whole family is together again flying around. The sugar water went by fast and they may need to drink more for more energy because it’s still cold from the rain.

How lovely to have the first signs of spring arrive.

Yes, it is, Rob. The cold still lingers, but the roses started the buds.

How nice. I’m looking forward to Spring.

Yes, Orange County maybe a little tiny bit warmer than Bay area. Spring should be here anytime now. It’s snowing in Portland where my daughter is.

I got buds on the Orchid, but this is the coldest Winter we’ve had in years.

Oh, Rob, you must post some photos of the flowers when they bloom.
Three nights ago it went down to 39 C. Good thing I watched the news and was prepared. We stayed in the same positions all night, to keep warm, I guess. One night I was cold but didn’t want to get up to find additional blanket, I was awake the rest of the night.
Hope the cold is coming to the end.

The plant does seem to be struggling this year, Miriam. I hope it does blossom. It’s been an unusually cold week.

Yes, I saw on my phone, 39F again tonight. It rained last night. We seem to get rain at night.

It’s going to rain for the entire week.

I have to hold off to planting flowers, but that’s okay.

I have some seeds for the garden as well. Last year at this time we were well into Spring.

The weather is all messed up!

It’s not as messed up as it’s going to get if we don’t do something to repair the environment.

That was what I referred to. We did terrible things to the environment and to ourselves.

Same here. My house is a good nice with many windows. It’s hard to warm it up evenly. That’s how I get sick, in and out of warm and cold spots.

And I never use the heat. I hate artificial heat. I prefer thick night clothing, lots of blankets and heating pads.

I remember those days, Rob. That was what I did when I was in Hong Kong, put hot water bottle at my feet inside the thick blankets. I came to Portland, Oregon 42 years ago, remember wearing cashmere sweaters indoor!!! I learned quickly to wear layers.

Right. I haven’t used space heaters in years.

We do when we don’t want to heat up the whole house.

I’m bundled under layers of blankets and heating pads. This is the coldest I’ve seen it get in San Francisco.

It stormed all night and the rain is a drenching rain. I’m hoping it will let up a bit so I can go for a quick walk.

It’s raining here also. We went to the gym. I prefer walking outdoor.

This is lovely, Miriam. There is nothing quite as nice as when the birds return. A sure sight of spring. ❤

I’m so happy for my baby hummingbird being alone for three weeks. I worried about him during the rains, and now papa and mama are back. It’s the papa that scoops him up and swirling around. ❤

How lovely, Miriam. I can’t do any planting until Memorial Day. Living this high up really dictates my planting time. My birds haven’t come back yet either. I have to redo my bird feeder too. Your words make me long for spring. I can’t wait. ❤

It’s fun to see the mama, papa hummingbirds back to play with their baby that was left behind for a month. They’re swirling around right now. ❤

I was so surprised three days ago. The blue jays even took a bird bath!! The parent hummingbirds went away for a month, left the baby (born in my backyard) here. The papa bird came back a week ago. The mama bird arrived 3 days ago. It’s still cold but the son is out. ❤ 🙂

They left the baby? Isn’t that odd? Our little birds are showing up, and my chipmunks were here yesterday! And now the weathermen are calling for snow over the weekend! I give up with Mother Nature’s mood swings lol ❤

Yes they fly 900 miles nonstop to Mexico from CA. The first year of baby can’t do that, so he stayed behind. I think the parent birds waited as long as they could before flying south when all the birds were gone. The papa came back in 3 weeks and mama in 3 1/2 weeks. There were rains and I got so worried. I saw him once in a while and he could find some spots with less wind and less rain drops. I guess animals have survival instincts. ❤

Wow, that’s fabulous. We had a baby robin here and mama went off and left him/her. I was worried the hawks in the area would scoop him up, but she came back hours later. He didn’t move from the spot she left him.

Hi Miriam,
Enjoy the last of the cold. We’re still very hot, and getting hotter this week, hoping it will cool down soon.

If I go to Australia again, I’ll make sure to go during our winter to enjoy the warm weather that you have.

I think you should come during our winters. They are quite pleasant. Our summers are far too hot. Late March until early October is the best time. 🙂
