March 7: Flash Fiction Challenge – What Happened to the Mouse?
March 7, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about a mouse. It can be real, imagined, electronic or whiskered. Go where the prompt leads!
What Happened to the Mouse?
“What is that box?”
“That’s my infrared camera.”
“What’s that for?”
“Did you see the oranges fell from the tree? Something ate up the cores. I wanted to see what happened.”
“What did the camera catch?”
“Look for yourself.”
“OMG! A mouse! I thought all the mice were dead.”
“I guess not. This one escaped.”
“Did the camera take the pictures last night?”
“No, these were taken two nights ago.”
“Was the camera on last night?”
“It was.”
“Did the mouse come back?”
“No, something else did?
“What?”
“Look again.”
“Oh no, I know what happened to the mouse.”

Oh dear, Miriam, a nasty ending for the mouse.

It’s still a mystery. My husband found fresh droppings in the shed. The mouse may still be around or they were from other mice.

What a sneaky kitty! Still, better that a cat gets the mouse than they have to spread poison all around.

Yes, we used to have County person come to set up poison traps. They stopped a few years ago. I have many fruit trees, I don’t want poison get to my tree!!!!!!

No! That would be bad!

I think the mouse is gone, somewhere! The camera didn’t catch any more things!

Mysteries resolved by the infrared camera! New technologies capture age-old predator and prey relationships. Amazing that you caught this on camera, Miriam and good job writing it into a story told through dialog.

In fact the first night the camera caught many picture of the mouse, triggered by motions. I expected to use one picture of the mouse, but they were deleted. The cat pictures from the second night were still there so I changed the dialogue to accommodate the missing mouse.

Yes, we lost the pictures of the mouse. The camera actually caught the mouse first. When my husband checked a couple days later, I guess the camera automatically delete the previous ones. I was disappointed but made a little twist of the story!

Haha, this happened a few days ago. Too bad the pictures of the mouse were deleted… But just have the picture of the cat is okay and leave the conclusion open ended!

It’s amazing, Carol. I always want to know how you can see. I know of a lady from Jamaica who was robbed in her country. They robbers poured gasoline over and burned her. She survived, and got sponsors brought her to the U.S. for treatment and reconstruction of her face, but she lost her eyes. She wrote a book about the experience. Apparently she reads and writes. I haven’t had a chance to learn how she does that.

Are use a screen reader and it tells me what is in the pictures. I can’t actually see them.

Haha, the camera caught the mouse also, but somehow when my husband reset the camera, the previous pictures were deleted. 🙂

Hopefully nothing else makes the cat disappear!

We’ll see. The camera has been on many days. It caught a squirrel too, but it wouldn’t eat the cat! 🙂
