Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #47: Five Elements
The challenge Amy gave us this week is: Five elements.
Five Elements Theory is a Chinese philosophy which describes that the world changes according to the five elements’ generating or overcoming relationships.
Generating Interactions – The five generating interactions are fueling, forming, containing, carrying, and feeding:
- Wood fuels fire
- Fire forms earth
- Earth contains metal
- Metal carries water
- Water feeds wood
Overcoming Interactions – The five overcoming interactions are melting, penetrating, separating, absorbing, and quenching:
- Fire melts metal
- Metal penetrates wood
- Wood separates earth
- Earth absorbs water
- Water quenches fire
The interactions illustrate the relationship even though they are not necessarily in the exact order as listed above. Source
The Five Elements Theory is also related to the Chinese Zodiac and Fengshui, a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy. Source

Perfect choices for the challenge, Miriam! I would have loved to visit Mt Helen and the museum. It is fascinating with the strong forces in nature. I went to Meimey, Iceland nd Katla as well after the eruptions there. Interesting. I love feeling small in front of nature.

Yes, Ann-Christine. The eruption of Mt. St. Helen did just that – made us feel small and at awe, and feel the force and seemingly destructive in of nature. It’s also amazing to see life and growth came back among the ashes!!

Yes, it is very interesting how fast the growth comes back. Surtsey island off the coast of Iceland emerged from the bottom of the sea, and new life arrived only some months later.

I love the photos, Miriam. I was living in northern California (still do) when Mt. St. Helen’s erupted, and even vehicles this far away were getting their share of ash.

Yes, Pete. I was in Seattle when Mt. St. Helen erupted. The ashes could be seen in 37 states and drifted all the way to NY (according to my later study). I’m in southern California now and glad to know you’re a closer blogging friend!!

Wonderful images Miriam – I especially loved your capture of the falls. I thought Mt. St Helens was one of the most interesting things I’ve ever seen. Did you go to the museum there? Fascinating

Yes, I went to the museum, Tina. I didn’t know they asked people to send in stories. I could have sent in mine because I was in Seattle at time of eruption and watched the horrified news.

The fall was one of many falls in that short loop of hiking trail. There are many trails. We went on hiking during freezing and pouring rain.
