Mary Chase Perry Stratton
“Welcome to Pewabic Pottery. How can I help you?”
“I want to take a pottery class.”
“That’s wonderful. Let me show you around.”
“Great. Who is in the picture on the wall?”
“She is Mary Chase Perry Stratton, our co-founder who started Pewabic Pottery in 1903.”
“Wow, a woman who did it 116 years ago.”
“Yes, when she was 36 years old. She studied art with the sculptor Louis Rebisso when she was 20.”
“Do you have anything she made?”
“We do, and pictures too. She lived to 91 years old and did many projects.”
“She is my inspiration.”

That’s a wonderful story, Miriam, giving a modern perspective to a historical event. I thought about choosing this Mary, but chose another when I was captivated by a schoolhouse. 🙂

Yes, Norah. It’s good to look at historical figures we could relate. I’ve been doing pottery and ceramic painting, so Mary’s story is attractive. I may take a pottery class one quarter a year at OLLI – the program for the retirees. I also have other classes to take, so must rotate them. 🙂

Thank you, Kamal. I’ve done pottery from clay and painted ceramic from green ware, so Mary Chase’s story was attractive to me.
