Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #83 – Future
This week, Ann-Christine invited us to look into the future. She said, “The future is the period of time that will come after the present, or the things that will happen then. Maybe a second away, a week, a year, a decade…”
When I saw the theme, it put a smile on my face. My granddaughter Autumn will be a big sister on or around March 27, 2020. My daughter and son-in-law have been preparing her for this big change in her life. They read books to her about being a big sister. They bought her a toy baby for her to carry.
When I visited them during the Christmas 2019, we went to the Children’s Museum. Autumn went to the “nursery” area and practiced taking care of a baby.
Take a look, I think Autumn will be a perfect big sister.

How sweet! Congratulations on the new baby news. Seems like just the other day that your little grand-daughter was born – she’s so cute, and they sure do grow fast! 🙂

I thought of the same thing, Barbara! It seems like she was just a baby. I can’t believe she’s so big and has learned to do so many things. She speaks long sentences also. It’s a delight to watch her grow. 💖😊

I have no doubt we are – they already know more than we did, lol

Exactly, V.J. I’m from the large family with a total of seven kids. My husband has five siblings. I was not prepared, but just faced it as the little siblings came.
My observation of my daughter’s generation is that, they are not an island, and like to learn from the research and from each other. I’m glad my daughter and her hubby are in good company of friends. ❤

Charming photos, and it’s good that Autumn is being shown how to help. Our two are five years apart and the older one loved helping with her baby sister.

Thank you, Clive. Yes, your two grandchildren with five years apart is good to distinctly set their roles.
Autumn will be two and a half years apart, old enough to be an older sister yet close enough to play alongside. We can’t always choose the timing though. I’m glad it happened when my daughter and son-in-law were ready for a second child!

Sorry, Miriam, I garbled my comment: it is actually my daughters who are 5 years apart. They are now 33 and 28 and are still incredibly close to each other. Those early bonds stay with you!

Oh, sorry, Clive, I read to fast. My daughter is at that age also. It’s great they have each other. Nothing like sisters!

Thank you, Miriam! I hope by the time the baby is born, Autumn will pass her terrible two a little further! Probably having a little sister is good for her. ❤ 🙂

Happy news, my youngest grandson was born just before midnight on 31 st March, thus just avoiding being an April Fool baby. His two year old big brother adored him – rather too enthusiastically at first!

Thank you, Janet! I’m happy to hear about your new grandson and your older grandson adores him! I know, April Fool, Halloween, February 29 are not the popular birthdays. I do have a few friends with those birthdays and without fail, get teased.

What a great idea these young parents have put into practice. Preparing the “first baby” for the next one. As Sigmund Freud said, “His Majesty, the baby,” referring to the entitlement the first baby feels within the family structure, particularly if that first one is a boy. Boy or girl, though, preparing the first for the second sibling will
mitigate the first child’s tendency toward jealousy at having to share her mothering. (How do I know this? I’m a psychotherapist in addition to being a writer, most recently of AMERICAN AGONY which Miriam was kind enough to host during its blog tour.) Also, the photographs are most touching and appealing. When that little girl grows up the parents and grandma can share with her what a tender and caring child she had been.

Delightful photos. What an exciting time for your family! I think it’s sweet that mom and dad are reading books to her in preparation for her new role as a big sister.

Thank you, Pete. Yes, books are good to introduce new learning. We read to Autumn, literally from the first day of her life. For a while, she only liked books to a point that I worried she would turn out to be a book worm. But now she enjoys building something with toys and loves to play with one “girlfriend.” She asks for Erica all the time and the parents get together a lot to let them play together.

Oh so cute and she sure is learning how to take care of a small baby. Nice pictures, Miriam and yes nice to be making little children new concepts. Nice post.

She’s softer with that baby than my boys are! How cute!

Because she is a girl and all women have motherly instincts cause boys though are gentle these qualities are not in them. They are more rough. Yes she is so cute.

I enjoyed watching her taking care of the baby!! When we were in the library or museum, some boys were rough to her. She learns to defend herself though such as saying “my turn,” it’s mine” but not doing it in a rough way. Yes, boys are different.

Yes they learn from childhood itself how to defend themselves.

I was surprised when she first did it. Yes, children have to learn to defend themselves.

Thank you, Chelsea. I mile for your comment. Yes, my daughter would say, “Be gentle” all the time. I guess she learned to be gentle.
Boys are different! Well, I guess let boys to be boys!

😀 I often say, “Be soft!”

I agree, Chelsea! “Be soft” is good also. She is two and there’re so much the two-year-old has to learn. My daughter is good in using positive reinforcement, or time out instead of scolding. This teacher grandma knows it takes patience to do it. 🙂
