Lens-Artists Photo Challenge#99: Old and New
The theme for the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #99 this week from Amy is Old and New.
The original Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, China and their new replica.
In Hong Kong, the few boat people (fishermen) live side by side with people living in high rises and those who own boats for recreation.
Last year we went to my nephew’s wedding in Hong Kong. The modern wedding is often combined with a traditional ceremony (I snapped the second photo in a park).

Hi Miriam,
How are you? Oh Wow! I have a photo like that one with the fishermen on the boats in Hong Kong! I looked at the back and it’s dated March 1981. I also have one of a junk! I used to be in and out of that city for shopping in those days. That was when I was working for the airlines. Those were the days!!! š

What great memories you have, Pat! Those were wonderful days of Hong Kong. I left in 1977 and went back many times to see my family. But I’m afraid those days will just be memories. With the political situation and Coronavirus, I don’t see any time soon or at all of going back.

Yes, Pat. I’ll see what happens in the election this year. Beijing just increased the police power in Hong Kong.

My niece from the same sister is getting married in October. I look forward to going, but Eva just emailed me and my daughter saying due to the Coronavirus plus the election during the time of her wedding, it may not be a good idea to go to Hong Kong. So we’re not going. Too bad!

My friend getting married in August has some pretty bad pre-existing conditions, so they put in a required 2-week quarantine prior to the wedding. This made it so I couldn’t go since I just don’t have enough PTO built up, and I know she’s disappointed about having to tell so many people they can’t come. I really wish she could have had the wedding she wanted. š¦

Yes, it happened to so many people in so many ways. My daughter baby shower host cancelled the baby shower. I went from CA to OR specially for that. My hubby’s niece graduated from high school. She went through the drive through ceremony to just get out, received the diploma ans went back to the car. Several friends’ funeral services also had car parade condolences. š¦

A beautiful interpretation Miriam. I was blessed to see some of the Terracotta Warriors and their horses in Malta. I felt very humbled and impressed.

Yeah, Brigid, the Terracotta Warriors was an incredible story and happened 3500 years ago. I’m glad you had a chance to see some of them.
Hope the pandemic will be over and you can go to the nurseries and beaches again.

Happily, beaches and nurseries accessible for last three weeks. Happy days.

Wow, good to hear that, Brigid. We haven’t gone anywhere yet. My daughter and her family went to the beach last week but their beaches are quiet even in normal time.

Excellent examples Miriam. I especially loved the old vs new wedding photos. A wonderful peek into a long-standing tradition.

I don’t have my nephew’s traditional part of photos because that was done in the morning with bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Yes, Jacqui, everything is up in the air right now. My sister who is the senior assistant administrator of one branch of the government seems to think the political situation is loosen a little. I hope China will rethink what they are doing in term of getting the negative view from the world. I don’t know too much yet.

Wow. The terracotta warriors. What a sight! When I was in Hong Kong 50 years ago the harbor was filled with sampans.

I know, John. I was still in Hong Kong. The younger generations didn’t want to be fishermen so the sampans are getting less and less.

So cool–both the Terra Cotta Warriors and the wedding photos. It’s lovely that they chose to do a traditional and contemporary wedding.

Yes, it was fascinating and an elaborate funeral with 8000 soldiers! Many Asian cultures believe afterlife and burn paper money, paper mansion to send fortune to their ancestors.

They are amazing, Denise! I’m glad to get a clear view without too many tourists in it. My nephew had a beautiful wedding. My niece from the same sister is getting married also. I surely hope to be able to go!!

I was unfamiliar with the Terracotta Warriors. I bet they are really something to see in person.
The wedding photos were spectacular. I love that your nephew and his bride chose to have both a contemporary and traditional wedding.
Finally, I am blown away the photo that shows the contrast between high rises and those who still fish for a living. Excellent photos, Miriam!

Thank you for your comment, Mae!
The 8000 soldiers were buried as funeral to protect the first emperor’s afterlife, the same idea as in King Tut.
My nephew’s wedding celebration was a whole day ordeal from early morning with traditional games from the bridesmaids to gain entrance to pick up the bride, to church wedding and cake cutting ceremony in the afternoon, to banquet in the evening.
Yeah, Hong Kong has diversified lives. Surprisingly, I hardly saw any homeless people.

My eldest son, 23, would love to go to Hong Kong. He has his own collection of terracotta warriors, but small ones. Great wedding photos.

Hong Kong is an amazing city to visit. My daughter and son-in-law went with us. I thought there weren’t too much for them to do, but my son-in-law studied the map and took the train to some areas I never visited even though I grew up there. He took my 15 months old granddaughter to go hiking. My brother and his wife love hiking and the places they go camping are amazing.

Thank you, Robbie. There are several popular cities for visit. We joined a tour, that’s the best way to go. Even though I speak little bit of Mandarin, some people speak with the dialect accent, I couldn’t even order dinner dishes before the tour started.

I would definitely have to join a tour. My situation would be worse than yours. I have been to South Korea and New Zealand and those are my only trips to that part of the world. We nearly always go to Europe.
