Lens-Artists Photo Challenge # 106: Autumn
The theme from Patti this week for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #106 focuses on the season autumn.
Forty years ago, I came to the graduate school in Portland, Oregon. One thing I appreciated Oregon is the distinct four seasons. Autumn is the most impressive with its red, yellow, and orange foliage. The highway by the school lined up with trees displaying the splendid colors for miles and miles. I finished my studies and moved to southern California, and I left the four seasons behind.
My daughter went to the university in Portland, Oregon. She continued to stay there to work and then got married. Even though I visited her often, but somehow those visits didn’t fall into the season of autumn until my granddaughter Autumn was born.
Autumn was born on September 28, 2017. I was there to help such as doing laundry so Mercy and Will could concentrate on taking care of their newborn.
I took these photos early October in Mercy’s neighborhood. Trees started changing colors. One tree was indecisive, so half of the tree changed to yellow and the other half wanted to wait. Other trees around the corner had green and yellow and orange and red.
There was a park nearby surrounded by Acorn trees. Squirrels were everywhere collecting acorns, ate some and buried some for the winter. Another squirrel was chewing something. It turned out that what he had was a fruit, not an acorn.
During my stay in October when Autumn was born, we went to the Cathedral Park. Someone was making giant bubbles. The kids had fun chasing them.
In Portland, Oregon, one annual fun thing to do in the autumn is going to the pumpkin patch. Autumn picked her favorite pumpkin last year. We don’t know if we’ll go to the pumpkin patch this year but I’ll be at her third birthday party for sure.
This is the park with the Acorn trees. Autumn is in the center of the autumn leaves.
I would like to conclude this post with one of my favorite song “Autumn Leaves” sung by Matt Monro.
“Autumn Leaves”
The falling leaves
drift by the window.
The autumn leaves of red and gold.
I see your lips
the summer kisses.
The sunburnt hands I used to hold.
Since you went away
the days grow long.
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song.
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall.
Since you went away
the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall.
Images of autumn in the US never fail to make an impression. Great pics.

A beautiful collection of autumn images. That pumpkin field truly says, “Autumn!” Thanks for the reminder of a favorite song from long ago in my past. I don’t think I ever heard Matt Monro’s version.

Thank you, John. There are several versions of that song with different music and even different lyrics. This lyrics and music are how I learned it. I like the temple of Matt Monro’s version.

We have bugs in the summer. Cooler weather doesn’t encourage them hatching.😊

This is a glorious post, Miriam, I also love the beautiful colours of autumn. I did wonder how Autumn got her name and didn’t connect it with the actual season as it is spring here in September. A great choice.

Robbie, in fact my daughter and son-in-law had several names on their list. They didn’t decide on one before the birth of their daughter (also for their second daughter). After the birth, they went down the list and called the babies by those names, then picked the names they felt right to suit the babies’ personalities and responses.

How lovely, Miriam. I had chosen NIcholas for Michael. He was Elizabeth first until we found out we were having a boy. When he was born, he just wasn’t a Nicholas and I changed it to Michael, which wasn’t even a name I had on my list.

Yeah, Robbie. We all like to know the stories of how we were named. It seems like they became part of our history like the way you changed from Nicholas to Michael.

Such amazing photos Miriam. I love that your granddaughter’s name is Autumn, how fitting for this post. I do not want to rush summer, because I love the sunny days and the opportunity to swim in my pool, but I love the colors of the changing leaves. Beautiful song.

Yes, Carla, we are more active in the summer and the sun gives us more energy and good mood. We only have a short autumn, then rush into winter. We like the summer to stay longer also.
I’m glad my granddaughter is named Autumn.
So glad you liked the song.

Yes, Jacqui. Nature needs to rest and refresh, die and rebirth. It displays it’s process in a beautiful way.

I live in the northeast, so we experience all four seasons. I love autumn (winter is too long). I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tree half changed over like that. The squirrel close-ups were amazing and the photos of Autumn, your granddaughter, are adorable. Thanks for sharing these!

I love four seasons, Mae! I could move back to Oregon any time but my husband has a large family in southern California and it seems to be too much for him to live far away from them. So I travel frequently to see my daughter and granddaughters!

Lovely autumn photos of trees and of your granddaughter! What a cute name too.
I do miss the four seasons, like when I lived in NYC. I think autumn is a beautiful season, transitioning into winter from summer. California kind of lags on the four seasons thing…more like blazing hot summer, regular hot summer, mild/ cool summer. Yet when it’s winter here, it gets cold, minus the snow and ice.

My granddaughter is very cute and smart.
That’s how I feel about California, Esther. Even winter, I called it teasing season. It’s cold but normally doesn’t last long.

California doesn’t give us much of a season variety. I get excited when it rains and hope it goes on longer, but it’s short and passing.
I can imagine how much a grandmother loves her grandchildren! Special bond.

I know, Esther. I welcome rain no matter how long it lasts. Are your parents close by? I only saw one grandma for a short time, so I want to be close to my granddaughters.

I was very close to my grandmother growing up. When it was just us, we got along great! However, if other family members were around, it got hard to mediate conflicts between her and other family members. Her stubborn and didactic ways bugged her grown kids and their spouses, including my own parents.
But she raised me in Korea till I was four, so she was my first mom. She passed away 10 years ago. Still miss her.
Yes, my parents live in SoCal and we live up north. Even though we live in the same state, it’s not easy seeing each other.
I hope you do get to spend more time with your granddaughters. Grandmas are known to spoil and children love the attention! It doesn’t matter how many grandmas you have, one who is extra loving and caring is better than having two or more average grandmother relationships. (Did that even make sense?! I’m not articulating well. eeek, but as long as you get the gist.) 🙂

We didn’t do that as a field trip. We saved the field trip on longer distance events. We only had two field trips a year. Thank you, Pete.
