Lens-Artists Photo CHALLENGE #114: Negative Space
This week for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge 114, Amy invited us to look at Negative Space in photography.
This is my first time explored negative space in photography. It made me interested to do a quick study about the subject. I only looked at three photography sites and the following is the basic idea.
Negative space is the area surrounding the main subject in a photograph. It allows us to create a dramatic image that attracts viewers to lead their eyes towards the smaller area of positive space.
Negative space should take up more of the image than the positive space. It has the effect of making us notice and inspect the main subject even more. It can be an unoccupied area.

(Photo from my backyard Sept. 6, 2020 4:00 p.m.)
The contrast in size makes us more curious about the main subject. The smaller the subject in the positive space is, the more noticeable it will become.

The negative space does not have to be an empty space. Things surrounding the subject are peripheral. They almost blend into the background, but they should never be the main subjects. They cause you to focus even more on the subject.

Thank you, Michele. California is getting better but Oregon where my daughter is, the fires and air are still dangerous. I pray for rain storm in Oregon.

We’ve stayed indoor with windows closed because of the ash falling from the fires. It seems to clear up a bit. Thank you, Kim.

I think of you and your family every time I watch SKY news or CNN. I am glad the situation is improving.

My part of town in California is getting better, Kim. Oregon where my daughter lives is still burning with intense fires. Air quality in the entire state is hazardous. My daughter’s family just stays indoor with windows closed. I pray for rain storm for them.

We’re in a safe area. Thank you, Paulie. I used tripod to do the moon shots. It helped to get the clarity before I click!

You nailed the challenge, Miriam! I have to ask you about the wildfires in your neck of the woods. We are in our little protective bubble with mild temperatures next to the ocean, but wildfires are happening to the north, south, and east of us. We have several friends in Oregon who have evacuated.

We are okay in our area. My daughter in Portland just asked me to postpone the trip in two weeks. I did. One fire in Oregon is arson. Another one or two in Washington are arson also.

My nephew and his wife are up in Portland too. We’ve been following their situation.

It’ll be raining in Portland on Thursday. Hope will help to stop the fire and clean up the air.

Miriam, the sun and moon shots are great examples. We’ve had some red sunrises the last three days, although I don’t know if they’re fire-related here in Arizona. I enjoyed the shot of your husband as well.

Hi Janet, the fire in San Diego is bad also. I don’t know if the smoke travels to Arizona. Thank you for reading.

I know the fires in CA are terrible and in Oregon as well. Not sure if our red sun is from smoke or not. I haven’t noticed the smoke smell, thankfully.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hopefully it’s not from the smoke. If it is, it affects the air quality.

Sad but the right thing to do Miriam. Avoid the air as much as possible. You’ll get there soon I’m sure

Yes, I will, Tina. I’ll watch for the fires as well as the air quality to decide on the next trip.

The concept of negative space is interesting in photography, visual arts and even in the way we breathe and process our thoughts.
I have never really read about negative space in photography. I will now remember your sentence “negative space should take up more of the image than the positive space.” Your photo with the grasshopper is exquisite! Your photos are always breathtaking.

Thank you so much for reading, Erica. That grasshopper made me laugh. It didn’t hop for a couple minutes, so I took several photos. I even had time to get a couple focused photos.
I just took photos based on my learning of arts, but photography has its own concepts so I learned something new today also.

Such a beautiful photo series for the theme, Miriam. I’m in awe with the moon shot. The CA fires… fearful.
Excellent capture of your husband before he dived in. Thank you so much for sharing your learning of this topic.

I was surprised of the moon photo also. The fires are scary. I hope we’ll have rain.

I think I have been eliminating a lot of negative space on my images. I crop to the subject. I can hear a voice saying “Fill the frame, lad, fill the frame!” I am not sure who that was. Probably a course I took or a lecture I went to once. But that moonshot is very impressive! Fortunately, at least some the images that are stored on iCloud can have the cropping restored as long as I used Photos editor. Something to try anyway. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thank you for reading, Stephen. Yes, I keep all the originals. I copy and crop for whatever usage. I don’t have too many negative space images either. I’m not a professional so just took photos for fun and for memories, didn’t think too much of the negative space.
