Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #131-Emotions
This week for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #131, Patti invited us to focus on Emotion. We choose the photography or a theme that evokes emotions. I could think of many situations for this theme, but for this post, I narrowed down to a couple of thoughts.
The latest excitement for us was on January 3, less than three weeks ago, when my husband Lynton turned 65. He retired in November 2016 and had an extension of health insurance for another 18 months, and then just paid cash for prescriptions without paying the premium for full coverage. He started the Medicare on the first of this year. It has been less than three weeks, but he had a Zoom visit with a family doctor, got all the prescriptions filled, and made all the other doctors’ appointments to establish a baseline of his health. He was like a kid in a candy store.
My friends and I arranged a surprised birthday party at their house for him. I told him they invited us for brunch but hearing me talking on the phone and running to the store; he wanted to know what was going on. I’m not good in keeping a secret, so I told him it was a surprised party. He had to act as if he was surprised to see the guests.
There were eight of us meeting at our friends’ patio. We didn’t go to any parties for ten months and were hungry for chatting with friends of thirty years. We were in no hurry to finish the meal. Even when we did, we continued to talk, and the party lasted for four and a half hours.

My daughter Mercy, and her husband Will, enjoy outdoor adventures. They regularly go cross-country skiing, camping, kayaking, to name just a few. They are in good company with a core group of friends who have the same passion. In June 2015, Mercy, Will, and their friend took part in the triathlon–swimming, biking, and running. Two other friends who didn’t enter the race but rode their bikes along the trail to cheer them. Will kept Mercy in sight all the time. The last leg was running, and they ran side by side. At the last stretch they were holding hands, pushed through the finish line together. Their proud smiles were ear to ear.
Friends came with signs of cheering messages. It was my honor to be there to join the cheering team and photographed the event.

In early 2017, I had a strong emotion connection with Mercy and sensed that she was pregnant. She didn’t say too much when we talked on the phone. In February, I couldn’t withhold my feeling and asked if she was pregnant. She changed the subject. My husband and I scheduled to visit them late in March, but early in the month, she and Will skyed us and showed us the ultrasound. She was going to surprise us during our visit, but their excitement couldn’t wait for another two weeks.
It is a blessing for them to have two adorable and intelligent girls. The three-year-old Autumn is a toddler nerd. She started reading by herself in her bedroom when she was 15 months old. For the first two years, she preferred books than toys. She now loves to play with problem-solving toys. Like parents, like daughter, she is a daring rock climber, hiker, and biker. She is her mom’s proud helper in cooking. Nora is an all time happy child with a biggest smile.

Happy Birthday to your hubby, Miriam. I could related to the Medicare candy store. Lol. We are a few years away, but look forward to that bit of socialism! Lol. And I love the photos of your family and sweet granddaughters. Such happy girls and full of personality! It was fun to see a post from you again. I hope all the business/tax stuff is behind you. ❤ ❤ ❤

I don’t mind that part of socialism, Diana. Many people around the world don’t have that. One adventage of working in public schools is that the STRS pays for medical premium until 65, after 65, medicare picks up from there. 💖💖. My granddaughters are full of energy. Will and Mercy try to keep them occupied and it maybe easier as the days get longer. 💖
Yeah, the business stuff is good for now. ☺️

My socialism comment was tongue-in-cheek. It’s something we pay into for our whole lives and what a relief when we age. I look forward to it.

It’s a complicated issue. I can’t begin to look at all the factors involved. Yeah, I’m happy with what it is! ❤

Thank you so much, Vashti! I took a long personal and business break! Yeah, for the first couple of years, I worried that Autumn didn’t know how to play and made sure the toys were available. My daughter often found her hiding to read out loud on her own. She memorized more than 20 books before she turned three. Before Covid, they took her to Children’s museum and zoo, and library every day in the morning to do different things. Now they go to the mountains and beaches as often as they could. Autumn is fine outdoor and she now loves to play with Nora. I’m glad she has a good habit with books early in life though. ❤

We had a similar experience with insurance, albeit not because of retirement! There was a gap between company insurance and Medicare that could rive a normal person broke! Medicare is wonderful. Love your pictures. You have such a happy family, Miriam.

I’m grateful for my family, Jacqui. I know very well from our friends’ experiences. A friend who has MS fought for insurance coverage. When I looked at the bills from hospitalization, it’s the amount they bill the insurance that drives the premium so high. When I was in the hospital, a respiratory therapist came to give me breathing exercise for 5 minutes a day. The hospital billed for $2,000 each!!

We’re thankful for friends, Mae. We are going through so much at this stage of our lives but are there for each other. I love watching the grandkids doing things during our video chats with my daughter. Nora is crawling fast and she tried to hold on to the wall to stand up but fell and bumped her head. Ouch, she had a good cry.

I miss my grandkids so much, Liz! My daughter is good at posting photos on the Tinybeans account. They went to the snow last weekend. Autumn hauled her inflatable sled up the slope 30 times and slid down on her own. It’s great that the mountains and beaches are within a couple of hours of driving distance for them to do things with the kids.

I can only imagine how much you must miss your grandkids, Miriam. From what I’m gathering, Autumn is quite an intrepid young soul. They have inflatable sleds now? I’ve never heard of such a thing! My brother and I did sliding old school with our mom’s Flexible Flyer.

I think Will never say “don’t do it” to her. One time, before the Covid (must be 2 1/2), she was riding her bike down the sloped driveway on one side of the street, crossed the street and up the sloped driveway on the other side she went; turned around and went up and down until she kind of crashed (didn’t get hurt). Will took the video and Mercy posted it. Mercy was glad she wasn’t there to see it. She would have been worried.
They took her to an indoor rock climbing place. She climbed up probably 15 feet with Will spotting at the bottom.
Will was a dare devil himself. He used to ride the kayak to go straight nose down the waterfall!! He showed me one video when he was dating Mercy. He is not doing that anymore. Just like my husband is not flying helicopter or riding dirt bike anymore after we got married.

I know, Pete. When he climbed up and down the tall ladder to do the home improvement the last couple of years, I was nervous that he might have an accident. It was a worry without full insurance. Thank you for reading. My grandkids are surely growing fast.

They are growing so fast, Denise! They grow at the greatest rate at this stage compared to the entire life. Autumn had a growth spurt of 1/2 inch in 10 days and Nora is crawling fast. I wish to be there to watch their development.
I’m glad to be back after a long break. Hope you and your family are well!

I watched the news every day and waited for a safe time to visit friends, Pragalbha. That was a window period before California got worse again. With the new government, help is on our way. I hope you and your family are well.

I trust the timing of your events as I did the same – had a couple of small gatherings myself during a window that felt safe. How blessed it felt for it all to come together. I am very happy for you too.
