Lens-Artists Challenge #132 – Striped & Checked

This week, Ann-Christine invited us to look at striped and checked images.
I started looking around the house both indoor and outdoor and noticed things I hadn’t noticed before. There is a striped area rug in front of the fireplace. There are horizontal blinds for the windows, vertical blinds for the patio door, and the striped fabrics on the couches. Going outside the patio, I could see the stripes of the patio cover and the beach chair.

I looked in the closet next. Twenty-five percent of my husband’s shirts have stripes or plaid. I think it’s true in general that most of the men wear stripes or plaid dressed shirts. On the contrary, I only have one pair of pants and one sweater with stripes, and one plaid sweater. If my office had a stripe and check day in the summer, I would have to buy a new top.

When I investigated the archives, there are several of my favorite images have stripes and checks on the indoor structures, outdoor structures as well as in the nature.

What interesting stripes and checks do you see around your home?

I love your creative take on stripes and checks, Miriam.
I did extreme downsizing before I relocated 2 years ago. (I donated 4/5th of everything, because I had to. Cross country moves are hugely expensive.) Somewhere there are two pairs of pinstripe pants that I couldn’t part with. I got a buffalo check comforter to use in the spare room, and of course the horizontal blinds. I guess the little (decorative) picket fence in the back garden could be stripes. 😀 Have a fabulous February. Hugs on the wing.

I know how it feels about moving. I only did one move after living in a house for several years. I moved 9 times in three years when I was a student, but even when I drove from Seattle to Los Angeles 40 years ago, I fit everything in one car.
When we moved from a house to where we are, we rented a large truck plus some items in our two cars.
I wish to move to Oregon to be close to my daughter’s family but my husband doesn’t do well in gloomy weather. It would be overwhelming to move cross the states.
I kept a couple of items I purchased 40 some years ago until I didn’t use it for many years.
Have a wonderful weekend, Teagan.

Yeah, funny how much easier it is to do things when one is a student, compared to forty years later.

A friend who worked for Disney was assigned to start the food manager when Disneyland was being built in Hong Kong. We went to visit him and his wife a few years later. They said they would never own a large house when coming back to the US. Imagine living in an two bedroom apartment size all the life, there’s no room for being a packrat.

Amazing photos, Miriam. The lawn chairs remind me of summer . . . ahhh, summer. 🙂

Yes, I sit out in the patio almost every morning in the summer. The day started to get longer. Yes summer will be here soon, Mark. ☀️

Oh, to walk in that bamboo forest, Miriam! It looks so serene and the sound must have been wonderfully soothing! I love your adventures into stripes and check and it is astonishing how much they are part of one’s existence when you take a look. My favourite blanket on my work chair is checked, the exterior of my new office studio a lovely line of pine cladding, whilst clothes-wise I can rustle up a blouse and dress in stripes! It is wonderful how you can become so creative in these posts and you have me looking at the world around me in a fresh and innovative manner! 😀

I didn’t pay attention to those patterns until thinking about how to do this post, Annika! I enjoyed doing the photo challenge because the theme make me think where I could find the photos for various themes. They also make me search in my memory bank of when and where I saw such and such scenes. They may even slow down memory decline!
Bamboo was my dad’s favorite and it always reminds me of him. 🙂

my pleasure and this might seem off topic (fro the stiles and checks)
but recently when i shared about the book plunge from liesbet – one of the reasons i reached out and offered to donor was because of the way a few others did that for me – and that was you with my book promo
thanks again for your kindness and support
and you see!
it continues to ripple as i pay it forward

They live 1,000 miles away, two hours and twenty minutes flight. My last visit to them was October last year. I cancelled two flights since then because of Covid. 😔 Miss them a lot ☺️

I love the shots from your archives, they are amazing. I would not have thought about stripes and checks in buildings and nature, but you had some beautiful ones there.

A terrific collection Miriam. Had to laugh at your husband’s closet. My girlfriend told me I need to step out of my rut and start buying some things that are NOT striped LOL. Love that you found so many things at home that fit the challenge!

Excellent, Miriam! And I am happy to see you had some fun with it too! The Autumn photo in Hong Kong is the most adorable ! And I could wear any of those gorgeous shirts! I Love shirts, and have always been a shirt girl. Never buy blouses and things – but men’s shirts! The style and variety of patterns are much more to my taste. Send my warmest admiration to the shirt buyer in your family!

I was surprised to find my husband has so many colorful shirts. I like all the colors but his shirts are too big for me though. I found some of his old ones he had when he was a lot younger and skinner!! I bought him some silk shirts but they stuck on his skin so eventually, I bought the raw silk which was heavier and wears better.

Raw silk is so nice to the skin. Usually I take my son’s shirts when he doesn’t want them anymore…

I’m getting to like comfy tops since I don’t need to dress up to go places anymore.

Sorry to say, I often walk around in my cosy pajamas…until it is time to walk the dogs. Some days I find a reason to dress up extra just to feel good.

I have my pajamas on most of the morning. Yes, I only dress up a couple of times a week when I have Zoom meetings.

Thank you, Mae. Autumn is so cute. The horse let me take many shots without moving. There was a black one and a white one a little bit away from the fence.

Erica had her first Covid vaccination today. I have mine tomorrow. We have just had our national lockdown confirmed to at least 8 March.

Good to hear that you both have the vaccines by tomorrow. As of yesterday, 26 out of 50 states here have the UK variants, some have Brazil’s and one or two states have South Africa’s.
My husband is doing the shopping. I go for walks with double masks.

It’s been a few years since we were there, but I’m pretty sure we’ve been in that same bamboo forest in Maui. That walkway looks identical to how I remember it in my mind.

It must have been the same one, Pete. It was the largest and densest bamboo forest I’ve been to. In certain sections, the day was like evening because there was no direct sunlight.

This is one of those exercises I loved to assign kids. They had no idea how many stripes/checks they could find in their environ. A favorite was tessellations.
LikeLiked by 3 people
I agree with you, Jacqui. It would be fun not to tell the kids too much first and ask what they see. They probably would find the obvious first. We did that in the classroom but not in terms of tessellations.

Hi Hedy. I’ve been taking a long break and good to see you again. It was exactly two years ago when we took that photo with Autumn in it. We are very careful these days with the new surge and new danger of the virus. Looking forward to getting the vaccine soon. Hope you and yours are doing well. 🙂 ❤
