Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #148 – Spots and Dots
Ann-Christine’s Photo Challenge this week is Spots and Dots. She wants us to have fun with it! But, also recognize and enjoy the different interpretations, meanings and importance of these two little words. Spots and Dots. Because even if they are small…they can make a big difference.
I came back from a delightful Mother’s Day week visiting my daughter and the grandkids. My daughter Mercy talked with Autumn about Mother’s Day celebration and Autumn understood the relationship of mothers. She said, “My mommy is a mommy. You’re a mommy and you’re my mommy’s mommy. I’m not a mommy.”
Autumn loves to have the undivided attention of grandma. She has a huge appetite for books. On the days when she didn’t go to school, I read about ten books to her after breakfast. Then she played for a little while. Her latest favorite was building a fort with tunnels. She took out all the cushions from the couches to build the formation and covered them with blankets. She didn’t want my help but wanted me to watch (with attention).
Apparently, she has nap time at school, but she doesn’t take naps at home. Mercy wants her to have quiet time when Nora takes a nap. It’s also the time when Mercy takes a nap. It takes a lot of energy to care for a toddler and a baby.
There are boxes of books from my teaching days. I pick the age-appropriate books with me on each trip.
After the quiet time, I read another ten books to Autumn. She likes to listen to the same books over and over again, especially the books with longer text. She picks up more details of the stories from each repetition of reading.
The day is getting longer, and the sun doesn’t go down until about 8:00 p.m. We take the kids to a school playground across the street from the house. The neighbor next to the school has a home farm with chickens and six or seven goats. Many kids love to feed the goats.
After the walk or playground time, we read several more bedtime books to Autumn. She would ask to read “one more,” but we must be firm, otherwise, we’d be reading all night long.
In the afternoon on Mother’s Day, my daughter’s family, joined by another family went to the zoo. Autumn wanted to see the Polar Bear and carried the white stuffed bear with her. The Polar Bear was in the water under the cave for a long time but swam outside for a little while. I was glad that Autumn was not disappointed.
Nora turned one-year-old in March, so she is learning to climb the stairs and playing with different toys. She loves to follow her big sister and does the same thing. During the several days of my visit, she learned to do new things. It’s amazing to see the kids making so much progress at these ages.
There are many small dots of progress in the child development but in a long run there’s a huge impact in one’s life these small dots make. Research shows the first two years of a human life make the fastest and most growth within the shortest period compared to the remaining life span. As parents and careers, we could facilitate and make the small dots and spots colorful ones in the kids’ lives.

This is Autumn at the zoo. How many dots and spots can you see?

Nora was fascinating to watch all the spots and dots flowing in different directions. She was trying to catch some of them.
Thank you for reading! Have a wonderful week ahead!

My family and nature give me so much joy, Mae! They’re the colors of my world. Without them, my life would be dull and boring. I love being with my daughter’s family. It’s fun watching my granddaughters.

I love your family posts, Miriam. The pictures of Autumn and Nora are too cute. Autumn sounds very similar to how Greg was at the same age. He just loved being read too. Ten books a day, every day.

Yes, Robbie, reading enriches the children’s knowledge and help them to be creative also. I’m sure you’re proud of Greg and how he has grown into an intelligent young guy!

Hi Miriam, yes, Greg is a great achiever. Michael is also doing well although he is not as devoted a scholar as Greg is. It is a relief to have children that understand the importance of education.

What a sweet beautiful post! I enjoyed reading it. I loved Autumn’s explanation on Mommys 🙂 I am reminded of my son when growing up, we needed dozens of books at hand as he would exhaust them one after the other so quickly. What a lovely way you tied in these childhood explorations with the dots and spots theme, along with the beautiful pictures!!

Thank you so much for reading, Pragalbha! Isn’t it wonderful when our kids and grandkids love books? 🙂 It happened I saw many dots and spots from my trip visiting my grandkids. I didn’t need to go to the archives except the peacock photo that well represents the dots.

I’m so glad you were able to spend Mother’s Day with your daughter and granddaughters. Autumn must have been in her glory to have you read so many books to her throughout the day. I got a kick out of the fort with tunnels. Such fun! The photos of Autumn and Nora capture perfectly the delight young children take in discovering the world around them. As for Mr. Peacock, his fan is just resplendent!

Isn’t it true, Liz? They are amazed with little things like bubbles, fish, or a turtle. Where did our excitements go? No wonder the great advice was to ask us to be like little children again.
I’m tempted to re-post my peacock post from my archives!

It was fun doing things with my granddaughters, Barbara! Another good thing was helping out so that my daughter gets a little break or didn’t have to take care of both at the same time. I wish to be there often. 🙂

A lovely glimpse of your Mother’s Day with Nora and Autumn. Kid’s brains are amazing, aren’t they? They’re sponges. Beautiful photos of dots, Miriam. They’re everywhere we look! And your grandchildren are so lucky to have you. ❤

Yeah, Diana, it was wonderful to spend almost a whole week with Autumn and Nora. I missed watching them closely of their growth. Nora was so cute, she learned two new things within days I was there. I’m glad my daughter knows it means so much to me, so she would post the photos on the TinyBeans site and comments to keep me updated. I volunteered to watch the kids sometime next month so my daughter and her hubby could take a weekend getaway for their 10th anniversary! ❤

I didn’t do to my daughter as much as they do to their kids, but I was under a lot of pressure at that stage due to the job and long commute. I’m happy for my daughter who could stay home to take care of the kids. 🙂

Thank you for your comment, Yvette. My daughter and her hubby read bedtime stories to Autumn from day 1 when she came home. She had the cloth books, soft books next to the toys but she preferred to flip the books rather than shaking the toys. Our earliest photo was when Autumn was 15 months old, she was sitting in a chair in her room “reading” (flipping) a book.
Again, thank you for reading this post, Yvette! 🙂

A lovely story – of which I so recognize my own children! “Just one more…” Books, books – what a joy it must be for you, Miriam! And how the children grow fast! I am so happy for you spending precious time with your family. Love your spots and dots – and that prancing gorgeous guy is really a feast to the eyes!

Isn’t it wonderful when our children love books? I used to call my daughter “book gobbler’ that she just gobbled down those books. What a fun theme you have this week, Ann-Christine. I watched that gorgeous guy pranced around 360 degree. They were everywhere in that Arboretum.

A beautiful and uplifting post, Miriam and thank you for sharing your time with family with us all and your exploration of spots and dots … I’ll be seeing them everywhere now! Have a wonderful week, my friend! Hugs xx ❤️😀

Haha, Annika! One of Autumn’s favorite books entitled “Nibbles.” “Nibbles” nibbles everything but the favorite thing of all is nibbling through all the books. Autumn is sure a bookworm. Mercy checked out 15 to 20 books at a time from the library but they have about 100+ books at home.
The Los Angeles County Arboretum has peacocks that freely walk around the garden. It was awesome to stand next to this gracious and beautiful creature. I think the owner originally owned 600 peacocks but gave some away. If you eat at the cafe there, you may share your outdoor table with a peacock.
Thank you for reading and comment, Annika. Have a wonderful week, my friend! ❤ ❤

Yes, I had a wonderful time with my grandkids, Denise! Nothing is more rewarding to watch the little ones learn new things every day. It warms your heart when your youngest granddaughter brings your a stack of books to read to her. Autumn preferred books over toys when she was a baby, but now she plays well with her little sister.

I volunteered to watch them so my daughter and her hubby could take a short vacation for their 10th anniversary! I watched Autumn when she was one and a half. It would be different to watch two, but we’ll see what happens. ❤
