Blog Tour – Behind Closed Doors, a Collection of Unusual Poems by Robbie Cheadle
It’s my pleasure to have Robbie Cheadle on my blog today to celebrate her new release.
Dear friends, please join me to welcome Robbie and her new book Behind Closed Doors, a Collection of Unusual Poems.
I’ll let Robbie tell you about her book cover, the title, and the different aspects of the poems. Here’s Robbie:
~ ~ ~
The cover of a book and its title are both important selling points.
The cover needs to be eye catching, suit the genre, and hit at what the book is about. My previous poetry book is called Open a New Door, a phrase taken from the song Open a New Window from the musical production of Mame starring Angela Ladsbury and Beatrice Arthur.
I first listened to my mom’s record of Mame when I was a little girl of five. My mom had numerous records most of which were Broadway musicals, but Mame was always my favourite. I loved this song the best. It is rejection of the run-of-the-mill ordinary life and a quest for something new and exciting.
I wanted to retain the doors concept for my second poetry book, Behind Closed Doors, even though it had a different focus. The poems in this new book look at the various parts of my life and what effectively goes on behind those doors that are closed to social media and the world.
The poems are collected into the categories of In the Boardroom, In death, In my mind, In relationships, In lockdown, and In nature. I wanted a cover that would complement the idea of the many doors into people’s lives and souls so when I saw this cover of multiple multi-coloured doors designed by Teagan R Geneviene, I knew this was the one.
The doors in many different colours suited my own personal idea that the doors in peoples live come in different shares. Some are the yellow, pinks, and oranges of joy, the reds of love, the blues and greens of comfort and coolness, and the purples of sadness and depression.
What are your thoughts about the importance of covers? Tell me in the comments.
Thank you, Robbie!
Now, here is the book information
Book Blurb
What goes on behind closed doors: in the boardroom, after death, in the home, during lockdown, and in nature? This collection of poems, ranging from rhyming verse to twisted nursery rhymes, captures the emotions and thoughts people hide behind the masks they present to the world.
What thoughts are hidden
Behind her immobile face
Quite expressionless
Eyes cold and indifferent
Scrutinising me – hawk like
This book includes some of Robbie Cheadle’s spectacular fondant art and cakes.
My Review
I’ve read Robbie Cheadle’s first poetry book Open a New Door and loved it. I knew I would enjoy reading Behind Closed Door. I’ve also read Cheadle’s children’s books, a young adult fictionalized biography about her mother’s life, and her historical fiction. She is a prolific writer while maintaining her demanding full-time job and home-schooling of the two teenage boys during the pandemic.
Behind Closed Doors is a poetry collection with themes about the author’s complex emotions and thoughts on her cooperated world, her personal dreams, her family life as a daughter, wife, and mother, as well as her thoughts on the lockdown during the pandemic.
Robbie is a qualified Chartered Accountant and specializes in corporate finance. The poem “Climbing Cooperated Ladder” vividly portraits the harsh reality of the cooperated world. Many individuals give up their family and social life to meet the never-ending demands with no guarantee of success:
“Sit in your office, juggling ideas and possibilities, while your friends watch movies, eat out, drink, and socialize, spending their weekends having a jolly good time.”
“There are no friendships in the corporate jungle Colleagues left to demise in this uncaring world.”
It reminds me of the headache, heartache, and disappointment during my ten years in administration.
I could relate to the poem “He Walks Away” that describes the mother’s joy, pride, and pain:
“She watched over him tenderly as he learned about life… her smile healed all wounds; her kiss cured all pain…
“It’s heart-wrenching to let go knowing he must… encounter setbacks and loss before success… but it’s the duty of a mother to set her son loose to fly alone.”
Cheadle’s poems about lockdown remind us how vulnerable life is. “One day I had freedom, the next, it was gone. How will this end? I find myself wondering, Will we take a big step backward in time fifty years or more?”
Cheadle’s Behind Closed Doors is a delightful hour-long short read, but the provoking thought will stay for a long time. I highly recommend this book to poetry lovers and non-fiction readers.

I’m not sure covers should matter that much, but I know they do. It is often the first thing readers notice, though not nearly as important to me as the content. As far as the cover to Robbie’s new book, I prefer it over Annie Got Your Gun. I like order on covers and I do think there is such a thing as too many things happening. Behind Closed Doors grabs my attention in a positive way.
Hmm, here we go again, Miriam. This is about the fourth time I’ve been unsubscribed from your blog. I keep signing up again, but it keeps happening. The same thing was happening to me at Jacquie Biggar’s blog, but now I’m getting her posts again.

I’m not surprised you got unfollowed my blog the fourth time. Liz, Bette, Diana… and more follow and refollow me every few weeks.
I follow myself so my posts show up on my Reader, and I got unfollowed time and time again. I kept refollow myself. I don’t know what’s wrong with WordPress. I thanked Bette yesterday. Now I thank you. I should thank Liz also for refollowing me yesterday. Perhaps I could email the links to my posts!?!?
Thank you for your input on the cover. I like your book cover.

Hi Miriam, the email notifications usually come through even when WP glitches so I still get your notifications. Others are having this same problem. I was unfollowed from Colleen’s blog and Dan is also having problems. I am sure it will come right soon, but it is a nuisance in the interim.

I went extra steps to receiv notifications, Robbie. I’m okay with 98% of the blogs. I only have to check a few when they don’t show up for a while.

Hi Pete, Behind Closed Doors has a busier cover than I usually go for but I think it works because it is repetitious so it doesn’t exhaust the eye. Books are like food, people chose food based on what it looks like and not what it tastes like. I often think that in baking competitions, people shouldn’t be allowed to used items that are not edible in their creation, it is a cheat. They do though, and this is how books have become too. People buy with their eyes and not their minds.

Great analogy with food. I look at it the same way as we all have different tastes when it comes to art. I’ve never turned a book down because of its cover, though one could argue that if the cover doesn’t grab our attention, we’ll cruise right on by.

I think covers are critical and Robbie’s cover for the new book is intriguing. I liked her explanation of how it relates to the contents as well as the symbolism of the colors. Great review, Miriam. I also really enjoyed this book and no wonder, since it is a deep dive into what’s behind those closed doors. It felt personal and relatable to me. Congrats to Robbie!

I know you designed your book covers, Diana. You know very well the thinking involved. I think we all have different closed doors and some just want everything behind the closed doors to never come out. But I think it’s healthy to free some of them.
Thank you for stopping by and Robbie is delighted you also enjoyed the book.

If someone is totally open for suggestions from the designers, they can choose from the options. But if you know what you want and try to have someone to do it for you, it’s hard. It takes a lot of communication. ☺️ Okay, my phone is down to 7% battery. Talk later. 😂

Wonderful post and review Miriam. I definitely have this one on my wishlist. As far as covers to, I am a huge cover lover and often pass books by because they don’t attract my eye. The cover is very important to me as it is my first impression of a book.

Yes, I picked up a book with a great cover, but when I read the book, it didn’t fit at all, so that is also very important.

Covers can be a deciding factor in whether or not someone gives a book more than a passing glance… It is our responsibility, as authors, to give our books a fighting chance by dressing them up properly.

It’s so true, Annette. The covers must go through the sifter to be retained before the books are open to the first page. They’re as important as the titles. Thank you for your comment.

Pingback: Thursday Doors — and Doors – Teagan's Books
Thanks for this lovely review, Miriam — and for hosting Robbie. I particularly clicked with “There are no friendships in the corporate jungle Colleagues left to demise in this uncaring world.” I worked as many years in the corporate arena as I did for the federal government, and I find that true of both. Robbie is really inspirational in all the many aspects of a complicated life that she balances.
Robbie, heartfelt thanks for the shout-out about the cover. That means a lot to me.
I agree with you that it’s important for a cover to reflect the overall content. When I decided to revise my mammoth “Dead of Winter” into monthly novelettes, one thing I didn’t take into account was the need for a new cover each month. LOL. Oops! Happily I enjoy doing covers, but doing a dozen or more and making them consistent yet different is a challenge.
Wishing you huge success with Behind Closed Doors and all your projects. I’m looking forward to the eventual publication of The Soldier and the Radium Girl too.
Hugs to you both.

You’re welcome, Teagan. People have to step over and on top of many to climb to the top. I tried to be friendly with the top administrators, but they were only interested in picking my brain. They were not friends. I thought I had a career when got into administration, but it got to a point I only considered it as a job and put in my time for retirement.
Congratulations on the beautiful cover and the wonderful working relationship with Robbie in designing her book covers.

I love the cover. Its’s busy and tells a lot about the book. Covers–I am constantly surprised at the weak covers on excellent books. I read them despite the cover when they deserve to be cherished. Even John Sandford’s latest book (an extremely popular thriller writer) has a cover I wanted to look away from.
Good review, Miriam. Sharing…

I know exactly what you meant about book covers, Jacqui. I came across a book cover with a pink color scheme of flowers. It gave me the impression that the book is about romance, but actually, it has spooky content. The flowers were something the characters saw before entering the location of all the spooky events, the main content of the book happened. It was a little misleading.

Robbie, I think that book covers are very important. They are the packaging for our literary products. They should be attractive, as I think yours is, but they must be indicative of the book’s contents. I’m learning more about cover design through my publishing tract for my M.A. Teagan did a smash up job with your cover.

You’re right, Robbie and Kaye! I basically designed my two book covers. I got a free image of a heart for my poetry book. But the book is not on romance, so I had to find a heart that represents emotions. The person who helped me to upload to KDP picked up the message right away and I was glad the one I picked conveyed the right message. For my children’s book, I did the sketch for my illustrator, then described the body gesture and facial expressions of the character. I was so pleased he did exactly what I wanted. For both book covers, I picked the fonts for the titles and author and created the designs.
I tried to work with a cover designer for my poetry book but somehow it didn’t work out too well. Probably I’ll try to design the covers for my future books.

Robbie’s introduction to this blog tour stop struck several responsive chords with me. My mother also had a set of records for Broadway musicals. I like the continuity of “doors” from the first poetry collection to second, and I’m becoming increasingly aware of the role that book covers play. I think more in terms of how the cover represents the content of the book as opposed to selling the book.

Hi Liz, I am glad you enjoyed this post. When I saw this cover on Teagan’s site, I knew it was the one for this book. I already have covers for all my WIPs too, I find Teagan amazing to work with and together we create something I just love. I attended an on-line course about covers and that brought my attention to the fact that the cover must suit the genre and the content of the book, which made perfect sense.

Hi,
I like your cover and I like the title. Too many people live their real lives behind closed doors. I can’t count the times I’ve heard someone say after a loved one has died, “I didn’t know that, they never told me.” Sadly, closed doors shut away the people we love the most.
I have your book on my to purchase list and look forward to reading the poetry.
Thank you, Miriam for hosting Robbie.
