O Holy Night – A Christmas Carol

“O Holy Night” (also known as “Cantique de Noël”) is a well-known Christmas carol.
Back in 1843, in a small French town, Roquemaure, a man named Placide Cappeau was known more for his talent at writing poetry. A priest asked him to write a poem for Christmas Mass. He took his request seriously. Placide Cappeau began thinking about the birth of Jesus. With that inspiration, he wrote “Cantique de Noel.”
Placide was so pleased with how the poem came out that he decided it needed to be a song. Since he was a poet but not a musician, he turned to a friend, Adolphe Charles Adams, to see if he would set his poem to music. Adolphe was a famous classical musician who had composed many works all around the world, but he agreed to come up with music for his friend’s poem.
In 1843 or 1847, according to two different sources, he composed music to go with the beautiful words, and the song was performed a few weeks later at a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
The song was premiered in Roquemaure in 1847 by the opera singer, Emily Laurey.
In 1855, an American writer, John Sullivan Dwight, saw something in the song that moved him beyond the story of the birth of Christ. An abolitionist, Dwight strongly identified with the lines of the third verse: “Truly he taught us to love one another; his law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother; and in his name, all oppression shall cease.” This verse mirrored Dwight’s view of slavery in the South. He published his English translation of “O Holy Night” in his magazine, and the song quickly found favor in America, especially in the North, during the Civil War.

Our church performed the Christmas Concert one year. “O Holy Night” was one of the songs at the concert. I was privileged to sing this piece. As part of the concert, I sang the first verse of the song. A friend sent me the mp3 of the music and I made it into a video.
Notes:
I want to thank Robbie Cheadle, who inspired me to make this video. When I posted the information about my Messiah performance last year, she mentioned she would like to hear me sing.
I also want to thank Diane Wallace Peach, who created the trailer for my poetry book, Song of Heartstrings: Poems of Gratitude and Beatitude. She inspired me to use PowerPoint to create to presentation and insert the music to create this video.

You have an amazing voice, Miriam. The song is a beautiful one that I have always loved, but you sound very professional. I’m not sure I could have ever hit those high notes. Absolutely breathtaking (literally and figuratively!)

Haha, Marsha. They you for your kind words. I did have years of training in voice. I had three voice teachers. Two of them were well known singers in Hong Kong. I studied music theory and passed the grade V exam, grade VIII in voice in the British system. Grade VIII is the final grade before furthering into either teaching or performance. I sang a lot of solos for weddings and special meetings.
I didn’t do solos at the church where I attend, but this recording was done at my previous church.
I want to have some of my things such as singing, painting, writing… to pass on to my daughter and granddaughters. So I created the PowerPoint and uploaded the music to make the video.
I’m glad you liked it, Marsha 💖🎶

I’m in awe, Miriam. That is such a cool gift to give your daughter. Does she sing as well? I started losing my voice quality as I entered my mid-sixties. My mother and grandmother both lost theirs in their fifties, so I felt lucky.

My daughter sings but sadly there are no choirs these days. My older granddaughter (4 years old) sings all day long. She sings soprano for sure. Her pitch is higher than mine. She has good memories. After watching Little Mermaid, she sings Ariel’s song in perfect tune. It surprised me. I asked my daughter to get her in singing group, Mercy said Autumn is shy, she’ll go easy on her and wait until she’s ready.
I still sing in a choral group weekly.I also sing in the annual Messiah performance. A friend and I have sung in the same group for years. She must be 78 and still sings very well. I lost some high range.
When I was in seminary, the president directed the annual concert. He said when you can’t sing that note, just open the mouth with the sound to skip that note and come back to the next notes. That’s what I do when I sing Messiah, because I can reach some high notes anymore.

I did that when I was singing along with your video. Then I dropped down an octave. I never really learned alto because when I was young, I couldn’t go below “g” below middle “c”. Now I don’t have a piano to test myself. I still have a good ear, though and I’m grateful for that.

The composition of the song is a little different than regular hymns. The story explained that the composer was an opera composer. No wonder I have been drawn to this piece because I love opera! Have a wonderful new year, Pam!! ❤ ❤ 🙂

I will be in Spain for Christmas this year. It will just be me, my husband and his parents. (and our 2 dogs of course) I will still do a lot of cooking because it is Christmas! Enjoy your time in Portland with your grandchildren. Christmas is always special when you are with children. Sending Christmas hugs.

It would be wonderful, Darlene! Is Spain more festive than Canada during Christmas time? Is Spain your first home these days? Have a wonderful Christmas with your husband and his parents! ❤

I spend most of my time in Spain these days. Canada is more festive as the houses are more decorated etc. Spain is not as commercial. We are the only people with outside lights in our area. The big celebration here in Spain is on January 5th and 6th when it is Three Kings Night and Three Kings Day, or Epiphany. This is when the kings come and bring gifts to the children as they did when baby Jesus was born. It is a more religious celebration here. Which I think is very nice.

I like it less commercial. Commercial makes the event business and loses the religious meaning. We went to Toronto for new year once and the area was still lit up with Christmas lights and Christmas music playing on the speakers. I like the celebration in Spain.

Oh, Peter, thank you! There was no America’s Got Talent when I was growing up, haha! I watched an eight-year-old sang so beautifully and win. She must be in her 20’s and has her own show. Yes, my chorale (not a church choir) resumed the rehearsals in the fall semester. We just had a party on Friday.

Also, not sure if you ever watched the show Monk – but the core characters sang this song at the end of an episode and it was so well done.
