About the Author

Hi, I’m Miriam Hurdle. I grew up in Hong Kong where I finished college and worked for several years before coming to the United States. While in Hong Kong, I taught Chinese as a Second Language at the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I was also the Director of the Children’s Department for Asian Outreach where I published four Children’s books.
I came to the United States for my graduate studies and received three master’s degrees in Education, Counseling, and School Administration, as well as earned a Doctor of Education from La Verne University in California. I worked two years as a rehabilitation counselor, then went into education. After teaching in California public school for fifteen years, I was promoted to a school district administrative position which kept me busy for ten years before retirement. The retirement made life easier since I survived stage IV melanoma cancer.
In my retired life, I enjoy volunteer counseling, reading, writing, blogging, singing, drawing, watercolor painting, gardening, photographing, and traveling. I’m married to Lynton Hurdle, have one married daughter. My older granddaughter Autumn was born on September 28, 2017, and the younger granddaughter was born on March 22, 2020.

I created my blog in 2011 but only wrote twelve posts from 2011 to 2014. My blogging didn’t take off until July 2016. At that time, I was to write about my cancer and recovery experiences. It has become further and wider than expected. I post short memoirs, poetry, short stories, flash fiction, family stories, travel journeys, and photography.
When I gained energy during the recuperation, I joined several writing and publishing groups. The Publishing group has retired professionals help each other to publish. Being around the writers and helpers was an encouragement for me to publish the first book, Songs of Heartstrings–Poems of Gratitude and Beatitude in October 2018.

The poems reflect different stages in my life, and it is storytelling in poetry form. I used my photography and watercolor paintings to illustrate the poems. The following watercolor paintings are three of several paintings included in the book.

I published my first children’s book Tina Lost in a Crowd in April 2020.
![Tina Lost in a Crowd by [Miriam Hurdle, Victoria Skakandi]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61yAgY-MYuS.jpg)
The eight-year-old Tina invited her classmate Erica to attend a popular Tchaikovsky’s Spectacular concert on a summer evening with her parents. During the intermission, her dad left the seat to buy some snacks. Tina and Erica followed him, wanting to use the restroom. The shoving crowd pushed them away, and they lost sight of him. It would be impossible to fight through the 18,000 people to find him or go back to Tina’s mom. This story tells about what happened to Tina and Erica after they got lost.

Admire that you are so rich with all the right things. I never qualified with any Div. except in Psychology then went onto Christian broadcast here in India, Life, marriage and kids, today I’m also an artist, a Poet but love to watch people, listen to stories of how God worked miracles in their life. It fascinates beyond words, to watch a beautiful life unfurl, against all odds. I have a little son who is blind and it hurts, but I know the Lord is Light Himself and works His miracles through those who wait. Stay blest.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your reading and comment. One blogger said she had to scroll down so much to make the comment. So it makes me appreciate even more when you take your time to do it. The theme for my blog has its limitation, but I’m afraid to make any changes. I admire your faith and trust in God. It’s not easy that you son is blind and you believe His miracles. My daughter was born 1 lb. 13 oz. She is a miracle baby. It was also a miracle when she gave birth to a healthy baby. He is good, all the time. We may not understand!

And Ah the beauty of such mysteries, Was just saying to a Blogger friend, that these are perhaps the things that keep Life so beautiful. all our tears that fall like healing rain, casting shadows of prayers in an earth thirsting for relief; or even our own selves. Thank you so much for replying, may you find much beauty and peace for all you give away so freely here. Have a beautiful day

Thank you so much for your comment. It reminds me of a conversation – we choose our direction (hopefully a sensible one), but we don’t choose our path. God leads out path to get there. I just follow. Have a blessed day.

So nice to learn a little more about you, Miriam. We have a few similarities as I have a degree in Pastoral Counseling, one daughter, and one grandchild. And I’m a Northwesterner. 🙂 It’s lovely to see that you are filling your retired life with plenty to do. And congrats on almost a decade in remission! Yay!

Oh Diana, thank you. It took me several years after chemo to get my energy up. Right now I’m doing okay except having lymph-edema on my left leg. I’m here in Portland with my daughter, SIL and granddaughter. Good to hear that we have a few things in common. Your flash give me an inspiration on my post. I have to find a photo for the illustration. How old is your grandchild? ❤

Hi Miriam,
My name is Justin and I have been looking through your blog. I love your artwork, especially your paintings!
The reason I am reaching out is I just started a website for beginner photographers and want to get some feedback on a couple of my blogposts to see if I am on the mark or have missed the boat. Would you mind taking a look? Here is a link: jusmcafee.com/on-location/
I’m hoping one or all of these posts my be useful for your readers. If not, that’s totally cool, but I thought I’d send it over and introduce myself anyways. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin,
I went to your Get Sparked Site and read a few posts and read about how you download the InDesign software and download Trojan. I was skeptical to open your photography site. I had Trojan visiting me at work. When I turned on my computer in the morning. He popped up and said “Good Morning” to me. I wasn’t sure if I would get a virus by opening your other site. Anyway, your photography is excellent.
WordPress has a Weekly Photo challenge – https://dailypost.wordpress.com/photo-challenges/smile/. If you participate and visit other bloggers, you may get more readers and followers. I love your story about taking the quiz and answered in French. You’re very intelligent. I’m sure you’ll find many followers. This is a friendly community. I interact with bloggers. When they ask me questions, I respond to them as if I would in other types of communication rather than refer them to your next post.
Thank you for visiting. Keep writing and posting photos.

Thank you so much for the kind words Miriam! I’ll take a look at the weekly photo challenge, and I have to apologize about the other site. I had no idea you could see that. It’s a side project I’m working on. And sorry about the Trojan reference, hope I didn’t scare you too much!
I will definitely keep posting photos, it’s too much of a passion for me!

Passion keeps you vibrant and alive. Your other site is attached to your profile. I started taking photos as a youngster. The drawing and painting help me to compose the photos, but I do it as a hobby so I didn’t make any investment in it as far as camera and accessories.

So nice to meet you through Carrot Ranch. My comment areas are at the bottom of my posts – the one for my short daily verse site (the first CR post): Space – works… unless somehow you got to the site I closed up? Anyway my fiction site is located through my second CR post To Catch a Thief? . I also have a longer verse site by that is not as active as the other two – but if you would like it let me know.
Happy New Year! I live in an interfaith family. Respecting all the difference helps us bind and love each other.
If I knew how to share photos better I’d add some to my blogs… but I’m sort of old school and not quite up to snuff on computer things. I do get to travel some with my hubby (he travels for work). I’ve gotten out of the country a couple of times. But I always like returning home too.
Cheers and continue writing. ~Jules

I like to the photos since I was a kid. I had a turntable that played old record albums. I had a separate radio/cassette player that I recorded a lot of classical music. I had huge computer when PC first came out. So I guess I’m not afraid of anything mechanical.

Mechanics…a hammer and nail no problem.
But Computereze isn’t my language 😉
But I manage 🙂

I can manage the basic in computer, enough to get by. When I was working, we had computer tech to do the tech stuff. They got to a point that they didn’t have to come to my office to fix problem. They could log-in to my computer from their office, and I could see the pointer moving in my computer to do whatever they had to do (I was logged-off). 🙂
Now when I get a new computer, I just let my hubby do the configuration.
So I’m not good at the real tech stuff. 🙂

Really amazing about your father sending you photos of his baptism. We serve a great God.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Thank you so very much for reading and comment. I do realize that you have to scroll several hundred comments to get to the end. Just that effort alone makes me appreciate you even more.
My siblings and I did pray diligently for our parents’ salvation and it was such a joy to know about their baptism. My parents did suffer toward the end of their lives but they went to be with the Lord peacefully.

I reread your story this evening and find it very inspiring. I appreciate that you are non-apologetic for your Christian faith. The story of you parents is very special. You must have quite a time keeping up with your active husband. Perhaps you are the same?! It has been a pleasure connecting with you through our blogs.
