Share Your World – June 4, 2018

Cee posts excellent questions in this week’s Share Your World – June 4, 2018.

A piece of clothing from your younger childhood you still remember?

I came to the US 40 years ago as a student. I checked in 2 suitcases to my flight. I had one carry on, and my purse. I wish I had brought more sentimental items, but I couldn’t. In fact, my carry on was too full that the security people asked me to take out something to leave behind. The problem was that I packed them very tight. After I took out something and repacked them, the bag was bigger than before. If you like camping and roll every piece of clothing tight to make your packing compact, you could visualize how I packed my bag.

During my three years of studies in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington, I moved 9 times. In 1980, I drove from Seattle to Los Angles, California by myself. It was 1,1 75 miles with 18 hours of driving. I stopped overnight in San Francisco. Next day I still arrived Los Angles after dark. The freeway was very intimidating to a new person in town.

Even if I had brought a piece of childhood clothing, it couldn’t have survived with so many moving. Fortunately, my sister had scanned some of my childhood photos and I made copies of them. The first one was when I was six years old. I wore a Chinese style top and matching fabric pants. The second photo was when I was in third grade with the school uniform, a white shirt and a blue skirt with straps.

Regardless of your physical fitness, coordination or agility: If you could be an athlete what would you do?   Remember this is SYW, dreaming is always allowed.I would like to be a competitive swimmer. I learned swimming in the ocean when I was in Hong Kong. After I graduated from college and started working, it was hard to find time to go to the beach. I went swimming in an outdoor pool in a park. During one swimming, I slipped and almost got drown. Ever since then, I was afraid of water. I still swim, but only in shallow water.

The photo was taken when Mercy, Will and her friend participated in the Triathlon.

In a car would you rather drive or be a passenger?

I had driven long miles during my working life. I stayed in the same school district for 25 years even though we moved three times. The furthest distance was 30 miles with heavy traffic. The longest time it took to go to work was two and a half hours. The driving put a lot of stress on me, so we moved closer, but it was still a 21 miles drive.

After I retired, I don’t like to drive too much, especially at night. If I had a choice, I prefer to be a passenger.

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

I appreciate that I could spend the time to do gardening, trim the grape vines, watching the Red Throat Hummingbirds, the House Finch birds, and the Mourning Doves.

Share Your World – May 21, 2018

I’m glad to participate in Cee’s Share this week. I like the great questions and here are my responses:

What household chore do you absolutely enjoy doing? (can be indoor or outdoor)

I do the chores as a necessity, not as an enjoyment. The house is always dusty. I dust the house because I can’t stand seeing a layer of dust on any surface. We have Santa Ana wind and it’s gusty, so perhaps it’s one reason that the dust finds its way to get into the house. Another thing is that when the gardeners mow the lawns, they use the blower to blow the grass after mowing. The immediate house is clean, but the dust just goes from one house to another.

I don’t like pulling the weed, but they grow faster than my plants and flowers. I pull weed because I don’t want my flowers to get crowded.

Create a sentence with the words “neon green” and “train.”

If we take the train to Fairbank which is the northern terminus of the Alaska Railroad, we could see the neon northern lights – the Aurora.

Other than your cell phone what can you always be found with?

I found myself with the laptop more often than my cell phone. I use the laptop to pay bills, have a spreadsheet to categorize the expenses, have folders and subfolders of photos, research, have folders of writing projects, and manage my small business.

We arrived at the hotel in Anchorage around 9:00 p.m. on May 18, 2018. After we checked into the hotel, Lynton went for a walk at the lakefront.

Lakefront

I was on the laptop checking emails. After an hour, I started to worry the whereabouts of my husband. I went to the lobby and the bar to see if he was relaxing there after 6 hours of 2 flights. There was no sign of him. I went back to the 4th floor of the hotel. I walked a zigzag hallway from rooms 4000 to 4045. When I got to room 4030 area, a housekeeper stopped me and said, “Are you in room 4045?”

“Yes,” I was puzzled by the question.

“Your son lost the key. I let him in. He is okay now.”

My husband doesn’t look like my son. What is she talking about? Whatever she referred to, I want to see whom she let into my room.

The room was quiet when I went in. Now I suspected that the housekeeper might have let someone else into the room. I checked the area of my bags, nothing was disturbed.

It was 10:30 p.m. when I looked at the clock. The sun would go down at 11:00 p.m. If my husband got lost, it would be harder to find his way back to the hotel after dark.

I prayed for his safe return to the hotel. Before I finished my thought, Lynton came in with his key. Oh, he has a key. Whoever claimed to have lost the key, he wasn’t my husband.

Lynton told me that he walked far away from the hotel, it was as far to turn around as to go around the lake. He chose to walk around the lake. Going around the lake turned out to be further than his estimation. As he walked further, it made him harder to turn around. He ended up going the complete circle of the lake. Even if he walked at my pace, the lake would be at least 6 miles.

I was so happy to see him!

Share Your World – April 2, 2018

Cee’s Share Your World posts these questions for this week and here come my responses:

1. What was or is your favorite cartoon?

My favorite cartoon is Peanuts. I like that because many of the comic strips have thought-provoking quotes rather than funny ones.

Peanuts is written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz (November 26, 1922 – February 12, 2000) which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, continuing in reruns afterward. The comic strip is the most popular and influential in the history of comic strips, with 17,897 strips published in all, making it “arguably the longest story ever told by one human being.”. At its peak in the mid to late 1960s, Peanuts ran in over 2,600 newspapers, with a readership of around 355 million in 75 countries and was translated into 21 languages. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanuts

2. Which cooking utensil (other than the usual pots and pans etc.) would you miss the most?

All my life until the time I was retired, I worked long hours. For many years I worked full time and went to school full time (It seemed like I was going to school all my life). Cooking has never been my favorite thing to do. When I do cook, I made due of whatever is at hand.

3. Would you dare to sleep in a haunted house overnight?

I’m not an adventuresome person. If there were ghosts, I don’t think they would harm me. But if I saw one, I would be scared.

I have a friend who is a real estate agent. After her mom passed away, she was selling her mom’s house. she showed it to a buyer one day. While talking, that buyer said, “Is there anyone living in this house?”

“No.” My friend said.

“There is a person standing behind you.” The buyer whispered.

“Described that person to me.” My friend said without turning to look.

The buyer described to my friend of whom she saw. My friend said, “That’s my mom.”

I’m thankful to be well again. During my hospital stay last weekend, after many testing to rule out the virus and disease, the doctors concluded that I had an allergic reaction to some chemicals in my high blood pressure medication. Whatever chemicals that didn’t agree with my baby, I had taken it for nine months. Then my baby didn’t like it anymore and reacted to it violently and cause 103.8 fever and rash all over my body. The medication was replaced by new one, and I’m doing well.

My granddaughter turned 6-month-old on March 28. I’m going to see her tomorrow, Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

Share Your World – March 26, 2018

Cee’s Share Your World posts these questions and Here are my responses:

What is your favorite color of hair? You can name your hair color or a color that you just like.IMG_3258b (2)

I like my original black hair. More and more grey hair takes over, but I decided to go natural without dyeing my hair.

List at least 5 things that you are good at. These are the things I am good at, but always welcome improvement.

  • I’m accepting, not judgmental. I respect other people’s differences.
  • I’m a good listener. When people share with me, they would feel that they are my only attention.
  • I’m good at using PC. I used PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Word, and Publisher for my work before I retired. I conducted a Publisher for beginners training.
  • I have good organizational skills. That was a given to do my job as a school district administrator.
  • I have a green thumb, even though not everything grows in my garden due to lack of or too much sunlight.IMG_0698

What is your favorite animal or type of animal? (pets, dolphins, stuffed, wild cats, etc.)

My favorite animal is Humpback whale. I’m impressed with Humpback Whale songs, their intelligence, and the way the mother whale cares for the calf during the migration from Mexico to Alaska. I did a post on Humpback Whale.

I had a scary experience last week. I had a fever of 103.8 last Monday night when I was in Portland, Oregon. It started with flu-like symptoms of Shriver and fever, was quickly followed by heat rash. My daughter Mercy took care of me until 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. My fever came down and I got some sleep. The next day I flew back to California. On Wednesday the doctor gave me oral antibiotics, but my conditions didn’t improve.

By Friday afternoon, I got the feeling that I needed IV antibiotics. First, I secured a follow-up appointment for Monday (today). Then I checked in to the Emergency Room. I had a steroid shot, blood drawn, and ultrasound was done. I was admitted to the hospital a few hours later. There was more testing, lab work, steroid, IV antibiotics to find out why I had such severity of symptoms. I stayed in the hospital until Sunday afternoon.

Anyway, there was no conclusion yet. I was discharged because the fever and rash were under control. I will have an appointment with an allergy doctor, hopefully, to identify the cause.

The experience was scary and got my husband and daughter worried. Yet here I am, recovering with 10 days of medications. I feel like nothing had happened. I’m thankful for the medical professionals and technology to get me back on my feet.

Share Your World – January 22, 2018

Cee’s Share Your World questions and my response:

List 2 things you have to be happy about?

I need the help of all the fingers and toes when I count my blessings.

I’m happy to have my daughter Mercy, her husband Will and now my granddaughter Autumn in my life. They have brought so much joy to me. I’m delighted to see Mercy and Will strive to grow individually as well as together. I was touched to watch them day by day, learn to be loving parents. Autumn is an adorable baby with good temperament. Mercy said, “This little girl melts my heart every day.” I’m privileged to share the same joy with her.
