Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #104: Summer at the Beach

This week Amy’s theme for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #104 is Summer.

“Summer is singing with joy, and the beaches are inviting you with dancing waves.” – Debasish Mridha

There are three beaches where we enjoy our summer in normal circumstances. All these beaches are about thirty-five minutes’ drive from our home. These beaches have different features for the beach goers. It’s a wonderful way to spend half a day on weekends.

The women’s group had an annual outing either at the Newport Beach or Huntington Beach. We could carpool or drive there by ourselves and get there around 10:00 a.m. Most of us would take a leisure stroll on the beach or walked to the end of the pier. The trip concluded with a lunch at a seafood restaurant. It was an enjoyable outing to watch the high tide coming in to splash the shore and watch the sunbathers and swimmers having a relaxing time in the sun. It was also wonderful taking time to catch up with friends without rushing home.

“At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides, and follow the sun.” – Sandy Gingras

Laguna Beach is a small city. It is known for the scenic coves and an artist community. It has an art museum. The city holds an annual art festival. Its geography has rolling hills and vertical climbs for hiking. The shopping offers one-of-a-kind retail shops, bath salts and oil, jewelry, clothing, to art galleries. When there was a low tide, we often walked through the rocks between pots of water to look for tiny sea creatures.

8.Newport beach paddle boarding

Newport Beach offers many activities and rentals for paddle boarding, body boarding, kayaking, and surfing. For individual or family biking, there are adult’s and children’s bikes, electric bikes, and multi-passenger paddle surreys. There are trips for cruises, whale watching, Sports fishing, and charter boat fishing. We had taken the pleasure to enjoy many of these activities and trips in the summer.

Thank you for your visit. What is your favorite summer activity?

Weekly Photo Challenge – Variations on a Theme

When Mercy was in 5th grade, she and I took a ceramic painting class at a ceramic wholesale shop. It was a hobby we both enjoy and continue to keep. Several years ago, we had a mother-daughter outing and went to do ceramic painting. When we took the class together, my first project was painting the grey bottlenose dolphins. I’ve developed the fondness toward dolphins and have various collection of dolphins.

We are also delighted to watch live dolphins in different occasions. On one of the vacations in Maui, my husband went diving and swam with the dolphins. On another vacation in North Carolina, my husband went diving and we were so happy to see a school of dolphins up close.

Cee’s Share Your World – November 27, 2017

Would you prefer a reading nook or an art, craft, photography studio?

I always wanted to have a Sunroom as my art studio as well as for my indoor plants. I like to paint in a room with good lighting. Painting in my backyard would be ideal, but I must put the easel, the paint, other materials, and tools away every day. A Sunroom would allow me to leave everything in the room. The sky, the trees, and flowers are always the sources of my inspiration in any creativity. In fact, a Sunroom could be my reading nook and a place for the indoor plants.

We had a quote this year to install a Sunroom. The one with glass roof costs $40,000, and the kind with glass windows without glass roof runs about $27,000. Do I want to pay that much money for an enclosed patio for painting, reading, and planting? I don’t think so. At the meantime, I paint in a room with good lighting.

The theme for Stream of Consciousness Saturday this week is: “ink.” This reminds me of the ink I used for Chinese calligraphy.

I learned Chinese calligraphy in elementary school when I was in Hong Kong.

Chinese calligraphy is considered as an art. The following are five scripts of the word DRAGON.

The shape, size, stretch, and type of hair in the brush, the color, and density of the ink, as well as the absorptive speed and surface texture of the paper, are the main physical elements influencing the result of calligraphy. The professional calligraphers use inkstick and grind the inkstick with water in the inkstone. I used bottle ink and poured the ink into the ink box with a cotton pad in it.

There are a couple ways to hold the brush. Commonly, the brush is held vertically straight gripped between the thumb and middle finger. The index finger lightly touches the upper part of the shaft of the brush (stabilizing it) while the ring and little fingers tuck under the bottom of the shaft, leaving a space inside the palm (students were told that the space should be big enough for an egg). Alternatively, the brush is held in the right hand between the thumb and the index finger. I learned to hold the brush in a common way.

The study of calligraphy includes learning the basic strokes, positioning the character, and copying exemplary works continuously, until the move becomes instinctive and the copy is perfect.

As part of the homework, I practiced the large scripts as well as copied a paragraph from the book in small scripts. I contribute my artistic appreciation to my Chinese calligraphy background.
