Colleen’s Poetry Challenge – Poet’s Choice of Words

Colleen’s 2019 Weekly #Tanka Tuesday #Poetry Challenge No. 126, “Poet’s Choice of Words”

The last eight weeks, our family went through many special occasions and experienced extreme emotions.

My nephew got married on January 19 this year. He met Summer when they studied for the master’s degree program. Enoch speaks Cantonese and Summer speaks Mandarin. During their courtship, they learned each other’s language. Of course, Summer’s parents speak Mandarin and my sister Yolanda, her husband Patrick and their daughter Eva speak Cantonese. Some family and friends speak English. So, the wedding was conducted in three languages. The vows in the wedding ceremony were done in Mandarin. During the break of the evening wedding banquet, Enoch serenaded Summer in Cantonese. It was the most romantic song I had ever heard.

The wedding was a whole day event. The groom and best men played the games responding to the bridesmaids when picking up the bride in the morning. The church wedding followed by a garden cake cutting ceremony in the afternoon, and the nine-course banquet in the evening.

The family and friends rejoiced with the young couple and celebrated the new beginning of their marriage.

Share Your World – October 9, 2017

Cee’s Share Your World – October 9, 2017, questions and my responses.

1. What do you consider is the most perfect food for you? (It can be your favorite food to something extremely healthy.)

I have several most favorite foods. I naturally crave for cooked green vegetables. I feel uncomfortable and dry internally when I don’t have that on a regular basis. Perhaps it’s the habit my body is used to when I was growing up. Since April this year, my husband has been making the green smoothie with kale, celery, carrots, mint, parsley, mixed berries, and cinnamon. I have the green drink every day. As far as having cooked vegetable, my husband cooks mushrooms every day except weekends when we may eat out. A couple other healthy foods I have regularly are avocados and bananas.

2. Are you focused on today or tomorrow?

I am only focused on today even though I do make plans for tomorrow. I am here in Portland, Oregon with my daughter who just gave birth to her baby daughter eleven days ago. Will took two weeks off from work. I came to spend three weeks with her. Whenever she thought of the time when she is alone taking care of the baby, she gets scared. She tries to practice doing things by herself now to prepare what would be happening two weeks from now. She ended up feeling anxious and frustrated. Yet it takes more effort to take care of a one-week-old baby versus a three-week-old baby. Will and I let her know not to worry about things that might or might not happen two weeks from now.

Baby Autumn is making such great progress that she could stretch to a four-hour sleep last night, whereas she woke up every two hours a week ago. Mercy is encouraged today to find out from the doctor’s visit that baby Autumn not only caught up with her birth weight but gained additional two ounces. Now Mercy doesn’t have to wake up every two hours to feed the baby.

3. If you could interview one of your great-great-great grandparents, who would it be (if you know their name) and what would you ask?

My maiden name is Lee. Lee is the second largest Chinese surname in China. I don’t even have the slightest idea of how to do a family tree on my side of the family. I remember my grandma on my mom’s side. My parents went back to China during WWII and lived with my grandma. My grandma went to Hong Kong with my parents when the War was over. I would ask her what the life was like in China during WWII.

  1. If you were given the opportunity to ride in a helicopter would go?

My husband is a helicopter pilot by hobby. He flew a lot before we got married. He has never flown after we married. Even if he flies, I wouldn’t fly with him due to fear of collision. He described that he had such “close call” encounters at least two times.

When we went to Alaska, we went on a helicopter ride. I don’t mind flying with a professional helicopter pilot. The pilot said if my husband has the license with him, he would let him fly.

We had a great view of the glacier, the mountains, and looked at the water from above. It was a wonderful experience.

  1. What are some of your favorite type of proteins to eat? (meat, seafood, eggs, soy, cheese, nuts)

I’m not an official vegetarian. My daughter has been a vegetarian for twelve years. When I’m with her, I eat tofu (from soy) and quinoa for protein. My husband has a new diet since April 2017. We have mixed vegetable green smoothie every day. We eat eggs for breakfast, salmon or fish for dinner, and have meat once a week. I eat nuts for snacks. My husband is doing great to reduce his blood sugar level with this diet.

  1. What would be your preference, awake before dawn, at dawn, or awake before noon?

I’m a night owl. When I was younger, I could stay up until 2:00 a.m. every night. Right now I try to go to bed before midnight. Due to the nerve damage from chemo treatment of cancer, I still have tingling in my legs. The sensation is stronger at night. I take medication several hours before bedtime, but the sensation still may keep me awake for a while. Therefore, I don’t fall asleep until the tingling stops

The time I wake up depends on the time I fall asleep the previous night.

By observing my daughter giving birth to her baby Autumn, it reminds me again that life is a miracle. Safe pregnancy and safe delivery are not something we could take it for granted. Any second could bring us stress or joy. I’m thankful for her safe delivery of a healthy baby. They came home yesterday. Their friends came to decorate their front porch to welcome and congratulate the new family.

Wonderful Baby Shower

Mercy had a fun Baby Shower on Saturday. Many friends came from near and far. The hostess was very creative in decorating her house for the party. There were several activities such as filling out a “Guessing” card, guess the gender, the weight, height, eye color of the baby. Another activity was filling out an “I Wish” card addressing to the baby of the thing they wish the baby will be or will do. After eating, Mercy opened the gifts. The person who gave the gift also gave her some advice or insight of being a mom. As part of the support, the hostess had the ladies sign up a “Meal Train” to bring meals to Mercy and Will after the baby is born. It was a successful party full of surprises and laughter.
