Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #107 – Winter

This week for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #107, Ann-Christine invited us to look at the difference in the winter when we compare the Northern Hemisphere with the Southern Hemisphere.

The first time I saw snow was my first year in Portland, Oregon. It was in November. I walked along the hallway from one classroom to the next. My eyes glanced through the floor to ceiling window. A thin layer of white stuff drifting down in the air. I stopped and observed. Each layer above seemed to get thicker and whiter. I realized what happened and called out while jumping up and down, “It’s snowing. It’s snowing!” Some male students walked by and looked at me. Probably the last time they saw and heard of it was from their little kids.

When I finished school in Portland, I went on to Seattle Pacific University for my second graduate study. The city welcomed me with seven inches of snow. When the snow came to a pause, I put on my knee high, custom made leather boots and my leather gloves to make the first snowman. The leather gloves got hard and stiff after they were dry. My boots were fine, probably they were made differently.

Is winter warm or cold? I think winter is warm because it’s the time for events such as Christmas concert, Christmas light cruise, Christmas parties with family and friends, and my daughter’s birthday the day after Christmas.

One New Year, we visited my sister’s family in Vancouver B.C. We couldn’t go skiing in Whistler B.C. because the heavy fog came in. We managed going to a nearby mountain for my husband, niece, and nephew to do snowboarding.

Back home in southern California, our chorale started rehearsing for the Messiah concert first week of November, leading to the two performances before Christmas. This is the highlight of the year for me.

The adult fellowship group at church has many Christmas parties. One year we had a catering dinner at a deluxe retirement home. The chef built a gingerbread village every year. He made one gingerbread house at a time throughout the year and froze them. By early December, he assembled the village with a train track and an electrical train going around it.

The last two years, we went on the Christmas Light Cruise and watched the Christmas Boat Parade.

Two years ago was the first-time snow and Christmas met. My husband and I went to Portland, Oregon to spend the holiday with my daughter’s family. I saw snow before the plane landed and was so excited to have a white Christmas.

Most exciting of all during Christmas time is my daughter’s birthday on the day after Christmas. Here, Mercy opened the birthday card from her daughter Autumn.

Is winter warm or cold in your part of the world? I would like to hear from you.

Happy Birthday

Trent P. McDonald at Trent’s World restarted The Weekly Smile on October 15, 2018. I have a story that makes me smile, but I have had a flu for two weeks.

Autumn, my granddaughter turned one-year-old on September 28, 2018. I was so glad to be in Portland, Oregon for the occasion. We had a delightful party for her at a park. Many of her baby friends came with their parents. She had her very own birthday cake and ate chunks of the cake and the frosting.

Cee’s Share Your World – November 27, 2017

Would you prefer a reading nook or an art, craft, photography studio?

I always wanted to have a Sunroom as my art studio as well as for my indoor plants. I like to paint in a room with good lighting. Painting in my backyard would be ideal, but I must put the easel, the paint, other materials, and tools away every day. A Sunroom would allow me to leave everything in the room. The sky, the trees, and flowers are always the sources of my inspiration in any creativity. In fact, a Sunroom could be my reading nook and a place for the indoor plants.

We had a quote this year to install a Sunroom. The one with glass roof costs $40,000, and the kind with glass windows without glass roof runs about $27,000. Do I want to pay that much money for an enclosed patio for painting, reading, and planting? I don’t think so. At the meantime, I paint in a room with good lighting.

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Golden Lion Dance

“This week’s theme of Golden flows forth from the wondrous tones that I discovered on the island of Skye.” – Frank

We were invited to attend my friend Dr. Edward Wong’s 80th Birthday Party. In Chinese culture, Lion Dance is a common feature in major events such as Chinese New Year, an opening of a new store, or major anniversary of a business. In this event, it was Dr. Wong’s 80th Birthday. He is a successful business man. His guests included Congressperson, Assemblyman, City Counsels, other government officials, and business owners.

The Décor of the party was the red, yellow, and golden colors that signify positive energy and prosperity. His Lion Dance team was dressed in those colors.

Cee’s Share Your World – 01/09/2017

Questions for this week’s Cee’s Share Your World are not easy ones, but I will try my best to answer them.

1. If you lost a bet and had to dye your hair a color of the rainbow for a week, what color would it be?

This is a hard question for me. I like my hair as it is. Well, if I lost a bet, then I had to do it. Okay, I would color my hair from dark purple and gradually to a lighter purple at the lower portion. I do have a lot of purple and lavender colors of clothing to match with the hair color.

2. If you could choose one word to focus on for 2017, what would it be?

My choice of word would be “Optimism.” I am an optimistic person, but the focus would be consistent in all circumstances.

3. What was one thing you learned last year that you added to your life?

What I learned was to be happy with my “new normal,” not to let the lymphedema (swelling) of my leg keep me from being active.

4. If life was ‘just a bowl of cherries’… which fruit other than a cherry would you be..?

I would like to be an apple. There are many kinds of apple, and I chose to be a red delicious apple because I like the dark red color and the shape of the apple.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

My husband’s birthday was last week, but he got a cold. He lost the senses of smell and taste. I’m grateful that it didn’t get any worse. He is getting better. I’m looking forward to this new week because holidays are over; my husband and I are back on our workout routine.

Cee’s Share Your World – 01/02/2017

This is my first entry of Cee’s Share Your World. I am to answer four questions plus a bonus question.

1. Would you prefer to receive a unicycle, bicycle, tricycle or motorcycle?

I do not wish to receive any of the above. My husband had three dirt bikes and a motorcycle. He sold all of them when he thought he had enough fun out of them. I took a photo before the buyer came to pick up the motorcycle. He still has two mountain bikes and one regular bike.

2. What is one thing you’d like to accomplish this year?

I will continue to exercise to stay healthy. Will continue to take classes to challenge my mind and learn new techniques in watercolor. I may want to take a Poetry class.

3. What was one of the highlights of 2016 for you?

The great memory was when we went to Spain to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

4. Would you prefer to fly a kite or fly in a hot air balloon?

Even though I am afraid of height, but I would like to have a hot air balloon ride some day.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful that I could be with my daughter for her birthday last week. We went out for a nice dinner. For the rest of the week, we are waiting for my husband to get well from his cold, so that we could celebrate his birthday. His birthday is today, but we may go out for dinner this weekend.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Anticipation

Next week this time, we’ll be in Portland, Oregon. We will spend Christmas with our daughter and son-in-law. It is such a precious time whenever we get together. We have been counting down the months, weeks, and days to the day we go.

My daughter and her husband pay a fee to cut their own Christmas tree every year. I love the scent of the fresh pine tree. Their plan is to take us to Mt. Hood. Oh, how I love to be in the snow! We may go see the Christmas lights also.

My daughter’s birthday is the day after Christmas. We will celebrate her birthday in a restaurant of her choice. She was almost a Christmas baby (I spent Christmas in the hospital)!

Great anticipation to Christmas and her birthday with much warmth in my heart! Here are some photos from last year.

Birthday Blessings

Living to celebrate another birthday is not something taken for granted for me. This is an extended life of mine granted the grace to be a cancer survivor. My husband, daughter and son-in-law treated me with a day touring the Mission in San Juan Capistrano. Then took me to an enjoyable, romantic sunset dinner at Dana Point, California.
