We took our vacation in Alaska from May 14 to 24, 2018. Our goal was to visit Denali National Park and Preserve to which we had missed from our previous trip. During my research, I found a tour that took us to Denali from Anchorage by Coach and returned by Alaska Railroad. It was a perfect arrangement for us. The train was more comfortable than the tour bus. Since it was the first week of the summer schedule, the train was not too busy during the first few stops. We only had one other couple in the same cart with us. Midway through the ride, the train stopped and waited for the northbound train. The crews from the two trains swapped, so the crew employees from northbound went to the southbound train, and vice versa. It was an interesting thing I’ve learned about changing shifts.
On May 13, 2017 Mercy and Will took my husband and I to Kelley Point Park in Portland, Oregon. The park is full of sky reaching trees and green bushes. It was right after the rain. The ground was still wet. We could smell the fresh green in the air. The park was along two rivers – Willamette River and Columbia River.
During Lewis and Clark expedition, they ascended Columbia River in 1805, and descended in 1806, but missed the mouth of Willamette River. The Native Americans had been in this areas around 1850. Since 1900, Willamette River became a significant river. Rich with sediments, deposited by flooding and rainfall on the western side of the Cascades, the Willamette Valley is one of the most fertile agricultural regions in North America,
The middle group of trees in the last photo is the point where Willamette River meets Columbia River.

During our tour to Germany, we arrived at Frankfurt. From Frankfurt, we took the Rhine River ferry to cologne. From Cologne took to the speed train to Berlin. While in Frankfurt, we observed that there were many bike riders. Even traffic lights have separate lights for bikers.
We wait by the dock for the ferry. That area is alway an area for biking, walking, and for family outing, and relaxing.

During the visit of our daughter and her husband, we went to Cathedral Park in Portland, Oregon. I took a few photos of the park and the bridge. The St. Johns Bridge is a steel suspension bridge that spans the Willamette River between the St. Johns neighborhood and the northwest industrial area. The bridge has two 408 feet tall Gothic Towers. The Cathedral Park is named after the Gothic Cathedral-like appearance of the bridge towers. It’s the tallest bridge in Portland.

Our chorale group and the orchestra had a musical performance at the Nixon Library at Yorba Linda, California. From the entrance of the main building to the Ballroom, there were flags lined up against both sides of the walls. I couldn’t help but had a sense of reverence as I walked through the hall to enter the Ballroom. Before our performance began, I stepped outside to the garden. There were walkways on each side of the fountain, and the shrubs were pleasantly well maintained. The outdoor hallway along the main building is decorated with large pots of date palms next to each of the ceiling to floor windows of the building. I enjoyed such a refreshing sight before our performance.

As part of our Travel in Germany, we experienced the high speed train ride from Cologne to Berlin. At one point, the train was running 250 km/hr (155.34 miles/hr). The train ride was as smooth as silk. We appreciated some beautiful countryside sceneries on the way, and arrived Berlin early in the day for sightseeing.

London is a wonderful place to visit. We arrived five days prior to joining our tour. My childhood friend and her husband took us visit places outside of London. One of the places was Windsor Castle. Some college students worked in the ticket office. On girl said, “The Queen is not here today. She went to visit my college!” If the Queen was there, would we be able to visit her?
We were getting close to Windsor Castle
Trying to find the entrance to the visitor parking
Going to the ticket office to get the self guided tour radios
Part of the Castle is not open to public, guards were on duty
After visiting Windsor Castle, we were on the way to Stonehenge

We traveled to Australia. First we went to Sydney, then flew to Caine where my husband went diving in Great Barrier Reef. After that we drove north with a small rental car the size of a Mini Cooper. Port Douglas was a nice town to stop by. Then we went on to Cape Tribulation where the rainforest begins. The first rainforest we had ever come so close to, but there was a big street bump with a sign says, “Four Wheel Drive Beyond This Point.” Well, so much for our interest!
