Lens-Artists Challenge #36 – Around the Neighborhood

Tina’s theme for Lens-Artists Challenge #36 is: Around the Neighborhood

Laguna Lake is within walking distance in our neighborhood. The word Laguna means lake in Spanish, so that makes “Laguna Lake” redundant, but it is known as Laguna Lake for many years. It’s about half a mile from our home on a hilly area. We sometimes walked up the hill to the lake and sometimes drove there if we started late in the afternoon. It’s 0.77 miles around the lake. My husband likes to run around the lake three times while I walk one or two times depending on how often I stop to take photos. The lake area is part of the cycling and horse trail that extends to different part of the city.

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Soft Feathers

During our trip to Portland, Oregon this year to spend Mother’s Day weekend with my daughter Mercy, Will and baby Autumn, Mercy took us to Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. There is a green patch by the lake for the Canada Geese to raise their young. The goslings still have the soft and fluffy feathers. The fallen seeds provide a fest for the geese and their goslings.

The Laguna Lake by our house is home to different ducks, geese, and birds. These seven newborn ducklings with feathers as soft as hair swam closely to mama duck and other ducklings together.

The first baby hummingbird in my garden took his first flight in the first photo. He has a white spot of the soft feather at the bottom. He is now six weeks old and his wings are not strong to fly too far yet. There are three of his favorite spots where he perches on most of the time. Every twenty minutes, papa swoops around to give him an airlift for a ride around my house. He then comes back to perch on the needle of the Date Palms or a small branch of the potted fica tree. I have fun watching him every day.

Thursday’s Special – Section

I discovered another lovely blog today – Paula’s “Lost In Translation” blog. She has a Thursday’s Special challenge.  The theme for his week is Section.

SECTION – segment, part, component, or in terms of photography a crop of a larger view. Have you ever taken a photo of something and then cropped it to add interest, to improve composition or to zoom in on something? – Paula

We went on the afternoon walk around Laguna Lake a few days ago. A pleasant surprise came before my sight. A mama duck was floating in the water with seven ducklings. The ducklings tend to stay very close to each other as well as trailing the mama duck. These were the youngest ducklings I’ve seen in the lake. In this post, I include two sets photos – two originals and two cropped photos of close-up on the ducklings.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Name

We walked around Laguna Lake today. I saw two ducks that I had never seen before. I took some photos. Here are the photos of them together and individually. I am hoping some experts could help me name these lovely ducks!

Good news! Ineke Kruger  at https://scrapydo2.wordpress.com just helped me identify the name of these ducks or geese. They are Egyptian Geese. See the last photo for info. Thank you, Ineke Kruger!!

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Flow

We went on the afternoon walk around Laguna Lake in our neighborhood. It’s always intriguing to watch these graceful ducks go with the flow on the water leisurely.

Once in awhile they make a turn with no hurry.

The water reflects the late afternoon sun creating golden color. What a relaxing life the ducks have!
